Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery started as the Jefferson Barracks Military Cemetery in 1826. By an Executive Order from President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 and an Act of Congress in 1866, Jefferson Barracks Military Post Cemetery became a National Cemetery.

Interesting Facts

The cemetery currently consists of 329.5 acres of land, of which 295 are fully developed.

There are a total of 130,000 burials as of Feb. '99

There are 3,255 Unknowns interred in this cemetery.

1st Lt. Michael Joseph Blassie, interred in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from May 28, 1984 to May 14, 1998.

The cemetery has 11 Commemorative Monuments.

There are 3 Revolutionary War Veterans Interred.

The are 1,140 Confederate Soldiers buried here, 15 being Confederate Unknowns.

Veterans from World War I, World War II and Vietnam are also buried here.

Also from World War II are two German and five Italian Prisoners of War buried here.
