In the movie "Pulp Fiction" Uma Thurman explains that one is either a Beatles
fan or an Elvis fan, that at some point you prefered one or the other. Ithink
I know where I stand. The Beatles basically begin theircareeras far
as North America goes in 1964. Now I came into this world in'64 sofor the
most part I was too young to catch them the first time around.I mearlyheard
the echos of the great bands of the sixties, while Bay CityRollersand Peter
Frampton were lastest and greatest. There wasalways this impressionleft
behind of a great band that had gone to the top and stayedlong enoughto leave
behind music that was like nobody else's.Theyhad neverbeen arrogant, cruel,
or mean spirited, but they played songs that were threeminutes ofpure imagination
and joy. Then they stopped and went their separateways.Somehow it stillfelt
tragic.
I had always wondered, what would have happened if they had kept going.
I have come to realize that even though the band was no more, the players
continued to play, each with standout acheivements, and with music that was
wonderful to listen to. Something still seemed lacking, like an itch that
could not be scratched. It has always seemed to me that, despite the freedom
that they gained, that the Beatles worked best as a group. Something in the
relationship that they had with each other made them better than as individuals.
I won't argue beyond this on wether this impression is wrong or right.
The "experts" are/were John Lennon, Paul McCartney,George Harrison and Ringo
Starr and two of them are gone.
It was Leonard Nimoy who actually gave at least a partial answer, a way to
scratch that itch. After the Star Trek series went off the air he would be
pestered by fans to whomhe would loudly proclaim "I am not Spock!". Until
someone asked him, "If you are not Spock, thenwho is?" which stopped himdead
in his tracks. He realized, after somesoul searching that no oneelse
was Spock, so he must be.
So, if nobody else is a Beatle, then are the Beatles the Beatles still? Not
just Paul and Ringo, the "Surviving Beatles" , but the whole of what was,
John, Paul, George and Ringo?
That is what has led to this : 4
.A companion album to the 1
album, 2(yet to come) and
3 (yet to come).
This is my suggestion for a collection of post Beatle-Beatles hits. I tried
to make a balanced collection that reflected the character of the albumsof
the Beatles. I debated with myself for a long time about the arrangementof
the music and I have nearly another CD full of music that was just so close
to fitting in. And I invite anyone who wants to ring in on their opinions
to send me their ideas. I will be posting up artwork for the covers and CD
label when I get to it and if anyone wants to make a list of suggestionsfor"2"
and "3" I'm willing to listen. I thought that they could be songsfromthefirst
half (in Two) and second half (in Three) periods of theband'smusic.
As to what is the dividing line, and what is the appropriatemusic, that'sup
for discussion. The only rule would be nothing from the
1 CD because these are intended as companion pieces.
This is my line up for "4". It will fit on and 80
MinuteCD. The music can be copied from whatever source you wish to use.
