The IcosoMiata
icosomiata

a science project for Burning Man 2000

Objective: Build a 16 foot diameter dome one can carry in a Miata to The Burning Man. Passengerless, of course.

Hypothesis: A 2-frequency icosohedron will have pipes of two lengths, short enough to fit in my car.

Arizona. Almost to Nevada. On the playa!

Experiment: Using PVC pipe we cut 35 5 foot pipes and 30 4 foot 6 inch pipes. See The Monkey House for the design. Remove passenger seat and glove box and add pipes. Pack all the rest of the essentials for surviving in the harsh climate of the Black Rock Desert for 10 days. Drive 1400 miles. Unpack tent and build dome. Have an absolute blast partying!

Top of dome built. Look at all the pipes next to the car. Next ring constructed. See the blue Bucky Ball? Done. She fits! Check out those teeth!

Observation: These pipes barely fit in my little car. Unfortunately I never got a picture of the inside of the Miata with everything stuffed in it, but next year for sure! The Miata was not much slower with 70 pounds of PVC and 70 pounds of water! The alkaline playa dust sticks to waxed paint very well, turning a black Miata into a flat grey one.

Cute little vampire. The Dustiest Miata ever. Camera on the ground. Very flat here!

Conclusion: At the end of the festival I realized the Miata will fit in the dome. Two neighbors, my sister and my brother help to lift it and I drive under. Since I will have a passenger next year a trailer is definitely needed.
