Crossfade from One Image Map to Another?

Dennis Miller writes: I would like to map a tga file onto a sphere (no problem), then have it disappear and a second tga file fade in as the first fades-out.  I can't seem to find a way to do the fade out since there is no option in the image map to make it transparent over time.  Nor can I use the lights since I want the second one to show up as the first appears. Anyone have an idea how to implement this type of crossfade?

Chris Colefax answers, then has second thoughts:
CORRECTION!  I realised as soon as I posted the original reply that it would be possible to use the TGA images; instead of using layered textures you can use averaged pigments, eg:

   sphere {<0, 0, 0>, 1
      pigment {average pigment_map {
         [1 - clock image_map {tga "image1.tga" map_type 1}]
         [clock     image_map {tga "image2.tga" map_type 1}]}
      }

where, once again, image1 is the first image you want to see, and image2 is the image you want to fade to.
