HEALING TOUCH THERAPY
By: Klaire L. Martin, RN

There are some of us in the medical profession who are becoming more and more aware that the patients we treat are not comprised of just organs, bone, blood, and a hank of hair. There is an ever-growing awareness that to enhance and promote wellness in the experience of being human or that of the human- being, we need to assess and treat the patient with a HOLISTIC approach. The Therapies listed in the following information are comprised of this knowledge.

You may have heard of Healing Touch Therapy, Therapeutic Touch, and Reiki. These are names of different approaches used in assisting the body to initiate it's own healing process. All living organisms have electrical energies in every cell. Collectively these cells emit an outward flow of energy around the body, which can be felt through the hands of an experienced practitioner.

If the body is in a state of wellness, (emotional, physical, and spiritual) then the sensation of energy that the practitioner feels is one of symmetry. I like to explain the sensation is one of touching the outside of a soap bubble. The texture is smooth, soft, with no sensations of coldness or breaks in that energy field and extends out, 1-2 feet from the body.

If there are disease processes within the body: Or the person has experienced physical, emotional, and or spiritual trauma in their life, then the energy field will have breaks, sensations of coldness over or around the affected body part, or a prickly (that of touching the quills of a porcupine) sensation.

In situations, if the person has felt the emotional need to be guarded or overly cautious, the hands of the experienced practitioner will assess that person's energy field as 'closed- in'; instead of extending 1-2 feet beyond the physical body, it extends 1-4 inches.

  1. What does the Practitioner do to aide in correcting energy imbalances?

Through utilization of learned techniques, the Practitioner works on the energy field of the person experiencing an imbalance of health or wellness. These techniques may consist of not touching the person (working with the energy field only) or a combination that would include placing of hands on affected areas to increase healing energy.

  2. What are the benefits of Healing Touch, Therapeutic Touch, and Reiki?

Utilization of these adjunctive therapies (in combination with medical practices) have been affective in reduction of pain (pre-operative and post-operative surgical procedures), accelerated healing process, reduction of, or in some cases elimination of pain in cancer patients, reduction of or elimination of back pain (personal experience),clearing of respiratory infections, increased healing of bone fractures ,reduction of stress/anxiety; and promotion of general over all sense of well-being.
