To a Heart’s More Innocent Time: Was there once a time? Forgotten now by present woes When we forgot the present’s crimes And listened to our hearts unfold Their innocent glory, Love’s new spring A time for all unwritten things New grass below, blue sky above And love open to all who glow A youth’s fair spring, A time of glee Where youth will live it’s jubilee A time of letters, looks and smiles Where trouble never lasts a while Though love’s unfurling brought its storms A thunderous wave of tumult, born By new spring rain and nerves unworn By time’s long string of history, torn A diary kept of eternal youth, Where there was no jade, just truth Just raw emotions laid there, bare In times of spring, in scented air A new love sprung, a fated glance Infatuation’s lovely trance And there he stood, her loving glance Eyeing his every moving stance Is it the fate, of girls who love In youth’s soft grip of kidded gloves To leave her there, in times so sweet To leave her future in defeat A jaded soul, that must reveal It’s past in softer petals yield A trace of paper, with it’s dreams So beautiful and so serene And so love’s youth is left behind To wound itself in later times With bitter tears and many frets And vices yielding to regrets But youth is there, in this hard form And spring can come again, hardworn Never the same, this gilded youth But she’ll survive the wolfen tooth And rise again, in some rare form Not leave the world again, forlorn The springs of youth must rise again And bring a smile again to those Remembering youth, a smile, a glance Of life that once so greatly danced -knh 6-10-02
