Concerts/Events I have been to, dated from earliest to latest (band-venue-date)
I have decided to add my "favorite memory" or story from each show...I remember all of them!
This is a 'work in progress' so it will probably remain unfinished until November 2000!
Nitzer Ebb - State Theatre 2-15-92
This always reminds me of Yasi Navai,
probably my best friend in high school,
who I no longer talk to...she up and disappeared...
we both loved the same music, nin,
ministry, depeche mode, cure...when most people
in our class ('91) didn't listen to that stuff...
my memory of this show would have to be,
unforunately, some guy behind me spilled beer
on the back of my head right before the
first song! ugh! But I enjoyed the concert
anyway...we were main floor, pretty darn
close to the stage, without getting in
the way of the moshers...back when moshing
used to be rather threatening, rather than
the pansy frat asses who 'mosh' today...
Beach Boys - MSU Breslin Center 3-23-93
Went to this concert with my then boyfriend,
Scott, during my first Beach Boys kick
at Michigan State Univ....yes, I still
like them...so there! Not the same
without Brian Wilson, but it was fun nonetheless.
Jim Carroll - Magic Bag 8-13-93
I hadn't really read much of Jim Carroll
(still haven't read a whole lot) when I
went to this...but man, the guy has
presence...he keeps you riveted to his
poems...I never liked 'beat' poetry,
but I had a great respect after hearing
him talk...every line came through,
no bullshit...he's lived it, and he lets
you know how it feels...I'd definitely
see him again, although I didn't make it
the last time he was in Detroit.
Lollapalooza - Pine Knob 4-23-94
This was the Pumpkins headlining show...and
it remains one of my best concert experiences
...we were up on the lawn, it was a gorgeous
spring night, and the Pumpkins rocked so damn
well, it was like a religious experience...
plus their light show was so amazing...I still
rate this as one of the best shows I ever saw...
I just remember looking out over the lawn, with
my friend Patty, and thinking 'damn, this is
something I won't ever forget'...I always regret
not making it to the first 2 lollas (at least
I think there were 2 before this one)...but
this one made up for it...if I remember correctly,
Cypress Hill was at this one too, and since
I've always been a sucker for 'Insane in the Membrane',
it was loads of fun seeing everyone with their
hands in the air going 'Jump! Jump! Jump!'
Lush - St. Andrews Hall 4-30-94
Ahh, Lush...I remember that famous pink/red
flaming hair the most, but I also remember
my friend Patty downing way too much Zima
(ick!) on the way in
the car, and the parking lot (which I bought
for
her, and she wasn't 21, much to my chagrin
...but
she was my friend, so I reluctantly bought
it)...
and she ended up puking before she
could reach the bathroom...otherwise,
it was a good show! (at
least she avoided puking on anyone,
and hid it
rather well, so we didn't get kicked out :) )
Nine Inch Nails - Pine Knob 9-2-94
Always brings back memories of the jealousy
I had for my friend Yasi seeing Nin in the
Latin Quarter in high school, on New Year's Eve,
where she said she lost her shoe in the
mosh pit, and luckily someone found it for her
...this was the first,
and only, Nin show I've been to...I remember
most the movie they showed during 'Hurt'...
immortalized in the video...seeing the bird
splash down into the water during the final
scene was really mind blowing...also, Hole
opened for them, this was, of course, not too
long after Kurt's suicide...she was cracked out...
saying something to the audience about Kurt
hating Detroit and something screamed about
abusing gerbils...I still don't know to this day
what she was rambling about, but she was definitely
fucked up...
Noir Leather New Year's Eve Bash - State Theater 12-31-94
This was so much fun! I went with Mike, my
boyfriend at the time, and there was a kinky
Noir show each half hour until midnight, when
they had an hour long show...funny, my biggest
memories of this night were the 'catwalk' show
up in the scaffolding, way up above the stage
in the State, and also eyeing this girl's killer
ass, she was standing around between shows on the
'L' part of the stage, near the crowd...oh how I
envied that ass! Much too round and cellulite free
and perfectly shaped, ugh! ;)
Marilyn Manson - St. Andrews Hall 2-4-95
YeeHaa! I have always liked MM's first album
the best...and this show was promoting that album...
I remember the LiteBrite on the speaker (
or somewhere near the speaker) and MM doing his
usual 'take down my pants' routine...this was
awesome, long before the hordes of fans forced
MM to do arena shows...a lot of freaks and
fuckups, and a general all around good time for all!
Massive Attack - Industry 4-17-95
Patty wanted me to go to this show, so
we went...I remember most the camoflage
netting around the place, kinda like a GI
Joe dream...a good show, mellow, and a good
memory of Industry.
Lollapalooza - Pine Knob 4-19-95
Sonic Youth headlined, I belived Moby was on
second stage, and although I don't remember
too much about this show (I think I was rather bored),
I do remember seeing Hole the second time round...
this time Courtney was a little more together...
she did show her underpants this time around,
and it was cute! Probably not the best concert
experience, since I don't recall too much
(and I wasn't drunk either...I mean, I've
always thought what's the point of going to
a show and being too fucked up to remember it,
except for the testimonys I've heard of
experiencing Tom Petty or Neil Young on a
pot trip, which I have heard is quite the
experience...but hey, whatever!)
Sextasy Ball w/ Thrill Kill Kult and - Phoenix Plaxa 4-29-95
Lords of Acid
Best memory of this was dancing like a nut
w/Yasi around...also the cool number
of freaks there...it was a good show, but
I haven't been back to see the Lords again...
KMFDM - Phoenix Plaza 5-26-95
I honestly have NO memories of this show...and no, I
wasn't drunk! Guess it just wasn't that exciting.
Peter Murphy - Industry 8-14-95
I remember Jewel opened this show (before she was really
popular)...I remember everyone standing around really
bored thinking, who IS this hippie chick? I also remember
having to stand in line for about an HOUR til they let
us in the doors (they were an hour late opening the damn
doors)...and the line stretched around to the back of Industry.
I also recall thinking Peter Murphy sucked, and I was
disappointed cause he only wore one outfit, a ratty cut off
sleeves tank top and pants, the whole concert...fortunately,
PM was redeemed when I saw him years later (see below!)
Ministry - State Theater 4-11-96
The Butthole Surfers - Phoenix Plaza 4-18-96
Front Line Assembly - The Majestic 4-19-96
This was a decent show, but LONG! There were,
I think, 4 bands altogether...Die Krupps was
one of them, and the memory I have of this show
was seeing some guy in the lobby and asking
him where the bathrooms were, and he was like
'I don't know! but hey, I'm the drummer'
turns out he was the drummer for Die Krupps.
I also remember the mosh pit, and 'cowboy Dave',
a City Club regular, hauling people up from
the mosh pit when they fell...what a gentleman!
Altogether though, I wasn't too impressed
with FLA. I haven't seen a concert by them since,
though they've come to Detroit loads of times....
guess the first impression ruined it for me.
Sister Machine Gun - St. Andrews 8-10-96
Meat Beat Manifesto - Sanctum 8-12-96
Download - St. Andrews 8-26-96
Fiona Apple - St. Andrews 4-3-97
Damn, this girl has so much talent...I went to
this concert alone, and enjoyed it so much...
she sounds and plays just as well as she does on CD...
I've always viewed her as the modern day white
girl Billie Holiday...so much soul coming out of
that voice...and she poured out stories behind
the songs, to give us a background...very friendly
to the audience, and the crowd was a very interesting
mix of young and old, beatniks and goths and normals
and everyone under the sun...I'd love to see her
again in a small setting like this, but I don't
know if she'll play a small setting again...who knows!
Echo & The Bunnymen - Clutch Cargo's 5-23-97
OOahh, that Ian McCulloch! I've loved the Bunnymen
a long time, but since I was a mere girly in the mid-80s
during their heyday, I didn't see them then...but this
concert made up for it! Ian was great...I went alone and
managed to sneak up pretty close...he is so cute! I heard that
the band hung out at a local Brew pub before the show, so I
was bummed I didn't go there first (it's across the street
from the venue)...I'd definitely go see them again, it was
a great show! I missed their last time in Detroit, due to lack
of funds.
Blur - Clutch Cargo's 6-27-97
Projekt Fest - The Vic (Chicago) 8-1-97/8-2-97
Kraftwerk - State Theater 6-11-98
The Creatures - 7-31-98
16 Volt - Shelter 9-11-98
Jesus and Mary Chain - Clutch Cargo's 9-25-98
The Church - 7th House 10-2-98
Covenant w/Decoded Feedback - City Club 11-1-98
89X X-Mas show w/Placebo, Garbage etc. 12-20-98
This show, once again with my friend Patty, was a
blast! Garbage is SO amazing onstage,
Shirley Manson just electrifies the crowd!
She is so into her audience,
it was awesome...so many bands just play like
performing monkeys; she really gets into her
shows...I'd see her again in a millisecond...
plus it was the first time I got into Placebo,
I'd heard 'Pure Morning' but never really got
into them until this show...and then I started
listening to them with a Vengeance! Altogether
fun, and *ugh* can't remember their name, but
that band that plays the song 'And then you
really might know what it's like, to sing the blues'
I never really respected the lyrics to that song
til I heard them sing it that night...
Einsturzende Neubaten - St. Andrews 12-21-98
Placebo - St. Andrews 4-2-99
Marilyn Manson - Palace 4-15-99
Sven Vath - Motor Lounge 4-24-99
Clan of Xymox - Labyrinth 10-28-99
Peter Murphy - Clutch Cargo's 3-16-00
Smashing Pumpkins - Michigan State Fairgrounds 4-22-00
The Cure - Pine Knob 6-10-00
Apoptygma Berzerk & VNV Nation - City Club 9-16-00
OK- I have to say this was probably one of THE BEST concert
experiences I've ever had...especially for City Club, which tends
to be a really bad venue for bands, on the blue moon
occasion when they do host a concert...but they promoted this
show like no tomorrow and it definitely paid off....it was
sold out and I think the City Club capacity was definitely
over the limit...the line to get in was interesting, seeing
all the club kids in daylight (doors opened at 6 pm)...it
was like a black hole, all the kids in ripped black tights,
black leather, and funky hair/boots/younameit...
we were packed like sardines...I couldn't believe that many
people showed up...but then again, they play Apop and VNV
very heavily at City Club...VNV was beyond words, sounded
just as good as they do on CD, and I don't give a fuck if
the entire show (besides Ronan's voice and Mark's drums)
was on DAT...they were simply amazing and I'd see them again
in a splitsecond...we all wanted to steal the cool VNV banners
that were hung on either side of the stage...now if they had
sold those (in addition to the cool stickers, shirts and cds) they would have made a true killing! Apop impressed me too,
especially cause I'd seen them a year or so ago and they
SUCKED! I mean, I hated that show (it's not listed here, as
I don't have the ticket stub), cause it was very weak, they
sounded like shit. They were definitely redeemed
by this show...very strong, powerful set...and they got the
crowd into it! During the end of Apop's set, I saw Ronan (
up on the benches digging the show with his red glowstick
(he was about 6 feet away) and after the whole concert ended,
Mark was around talking to the locals...he is one BIG guy...like
about 6'3 and built (not bodybuilder built, but just a solid
guy, lean but mean! as they say). I went to Labyrinth after
the show, and it was like Heaven...so many cool people there.
What the hell happens to these people in between concerts???
They don't show up for regular clubbing, but it was the coolest
crowd I've yet seen at Labyrinth...also, Mark was down there, and
someone said they saw Ronan too...I actually went up to Mark and
said 'I really enjoyed your show!' and he responded with great
kindness, asking my name and kissing my hand and saying
'Thanks!' Acc. to the local hip news rag, Metro Times, Mark
was heard saying that he loved Detroit so much he wanted to
move here! Overall one of the best nights in Detroit!!
Elastica - Shelter 9-28-00
Culture Club - Fox Theatre 10-7-00
Ok, I won't kid you...I've been in love with
Boy George, on and off, for something like 17 years
now (oh god, I am old)...I remember getting chicken
pox when I was like, 10, and my dad asked me if
I wanted/needed anything, and I said 'why yes,
the new Culture Club Album!'....I guess I was a
fag hag way back when...oh by the way, this is
my fave picture of Boy
So, anyway, the concert was very
awesome...I went alone, and had an
amazing seat, about 50 feet away from
Boy, among the 50 year old losers who
had season tix to the Fox, at least that's
how it looked, for God's sake, almost
everyone was *sitting*!! argh! ...the
only excitement until Culture Club
came on was the 'smoking area'...they don't
allow smoking in the Fox, so everyone has
to pile out of doors to the Detroit sidestreets
...that was the most interesting array of fag
queens, drag queens, lesbians and altogether
freaks in the place...they probably all had
balcony seats...i only snagged my cool seat
cause I bought a single ticket...so by the
end of the show, we all said 'fuck it' and
swarmed to the edge of the stage...even Boy
said 'Detroit, I dont' think you know what to
make of me!' and a familiar quote something
like 'you're not a man til you've had 6" up
your ass"...gotta love Boy....the crowd near
me on main floor was SOOO lame...so I had to
rush the orchestra pit...me and a bunch of fag
boys and hyperventilating girls...who looked
suspiciously like coked out sorority queens....
but hey, we had fun, we saw Boy from about 5
feet away (oh my, he's gotten a bit chubby!)
and a good time was had by all near the stage...
I even caught the eye of Mikey! I have to say that
the concert was way more subdued that I expected
(after hearing Boy say that this show was going to
be a 'techno' more upbeat version of the old
Culture Club), but to see him do 'Black Money'
and 'Everything I Own', not to mention 'Kharma
Chameleon' and 'Time', was enough for me....now,
if only I could solve the question...who would
win in a catfight...Brian Molko or Boy George?
My hunch is that Boy would win....after all,
he's been around more, seen it, done that, and
overall is the sexiest gay boy I've ever seen....
:)
