SAVORING MOMENTS OF PEACE
The physical body hungers always for nurture and comfort. This meditation guides you to moments of peace through the act of a single swallow.
Imagine first a coffee mug. Bring the mug into sharp focus and let all other images fade from your mind. Notice its shape, color, and size. See it suspended in air with nothing around it. Allow it to slowly rotate so that you can see both sides. Let it be still.
Now place the mug on a surface in a setting of your choice. Choose any place that best suits the mug. Notice the place you have chosen--colors, textures, objects, sounds. Notice the time of day. When you have seen all within the setting, enter it yourself. Be aware of how you feel in this place. Look again at the mug and hold it in your mind.
Bring into your awareness the aroma of your favorite warm beverage--coffee, tea, cocoa, whatever soothes you. Let the smell enter your nostrils and sift through your memory. Look at the mug and notice that it is now full. Lean close and breathe in the aroma.
Place your hands around the mug and feel its warmth radiate through them to your arms. Feel the comfort of this moment.
In full awareness of your hands around the mug, bring it to your lips. Let your mouth linger on the rim of the mug, noticing again its texture and warmth. Take a sip from the mug and savor its taste within your mouth. Be aware of the perfection of this moment. Swallow just once.
Return the mug to its resting place and remove your hands from it. Gaze at it as you remember the aroma and taste. Allow the setting to fade until only the mug remains. Realize in this moment that one sip--one swallow--fills you with the ease of peace.
When you are ready, take three deep breaths, release the image of the mug, allow it to fade from your awareness. Return to the present place and time with the memory of all you have experienced during this exercise.
