Vietamese actress Thuy Trang is best known in the entertainment industry for her role as Trini Kwan on the kids show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a role she played for 2 seasons. She has also appeared as Kali, a biker chick villainess in The Crow: City Of Angels and the movies Spy Hard with Leslie Neilsen and Cyberstrike with her power ranger co-stars Austin St. John and Walter Jones.
Born on December 14, 1973 in South Vietnam, Thuy's childhood was actually quite dramatic. Her father, who served in the Vietnam War, had to flea to the United States for political asylum after the fall of Saigon and Thuy, her mother, two brothers and sister were left behind. They later boarded a cargo ship with other refugees and fled for the US. The struggling family barely survived the trip but they did eventually, thank God, make it to the states. Her father shortly passed away, and Thuy was forced to grow up quickly, supporting her family emotionally and financially.
Thuy has a Vietnamese, Chinese and French background and speaks some of each language. She studied civil engineering at UC Irvine under a scholarship before landing her role as Trini on Power Rangers. Thuy was happy with her role because it provided her with the chance to be a role model. She left the show to concentrate on her career and hopefully return to her studies of civil engineering. Her goal is to be taken seriously as an actress. Her most recent work was a video called The Encyclopedia of Martial Arts in which her former power ranger co-star Austin St. John is also featured.
On her spare time, Thuy likes to read, play tennis and hang out with her friends.
Thuy was my first and favourite ranger before Catherine Sutherland showed up. However, Thuy is my favourite Asian actor. She has a refreshing mix of East and Asian flavours and an on-screen presence that grows stronger with each work. She is also an amazingly beautiful actress with or without makeup. Her on screen presence is both commanding and vulnerable. I really look forward to seeing more of this growing talent in the future.
