The Millennium suffers another impending apocalypse in Lost Souls

Kept in the can and shuffled around for over a year, this Winona Ryder vehicle, originally slated to star Meg Ryan, combines elements from all those God’s SWAT Team movies like End of Days in the over-stylized directorial debut of frequent Spielberg cinematographer Janusz Kaminski (Schindler’s List; Saving Private Ryan).

Ryder plays Maya Larkin, a former possession victim who figures out that true-crime author Peter Kelson (Ben Chaplin, from The Thin Red Line) is unknowingly about to become the Antichrist. This movie opened with a quote from “the 17th Book of Deuteronomy,” stating “a man born of incest something something Satan blah blah” I can’t remember. (I checked the 17th chapter of Deuteronomy in the Bible for clues, but it just talked about how many horses a king should have.) That initial clue did immediately put me off Kelson’s creepy “uncle,” though. Everybody runs through an Ozzy video (complete with wobbly heads, and fighting dogs borrowed from The Exorcist) until Winona (looking capably disturbed, but then she should be, as much practice as she’s had) saves the day with a little help from a trick digital clock in Peter’s fancy SUV. It’s amazing the options you can get in a Range Rover. D+
