Admiral Shayell

Diving for the Rouwenza Bell

Admiral Shayell dives for the Rouwenza Bell

Angry to discover that Admiral Shayell's refusal to listen to Rissa had led to the wreck of his fleet, King Andrew exiled him to the Old Ixilon tower not far from the shipwreck site. He renamed that area "Association Point" after the lost flagship to make sure that Shayell would be constantly reminded of his error. Finally, determined that the admiral should have no easy escape from his torment, King Andrew cursed him to be unable to die, become senile or go mad.

As a descendant of Cavaliers who'd fled Cromwell's hatchetmen, Shayell was too much of a royalist to rebel against his king. However, he was also too much of a man to meekly give up. He soon realized that the effects of the curse could be put to uses the king had never anticipated.

Among them was the ability to dive at depths and durations that would kill an ordinary person without specialized equipment. He soon decided to salvage various items from the wreck of his flagship. Most important of these was the ship's bell, which he had determined to hang in the lighthouse, which everyone was already calling the Pharos of Association Point. To underline how he was standing the curse on its head, he determined to give the bell it's own name, the Old Ixilon word "rouwenza," which had the sense of "eucatastrophe" or "turning bad to good."
