CLOSE TO NATURE
IN MY GARDEN

This page includes garden tips, how-to fun and easy
projects, camping and hiking helps. Links to these
topics out on the World Wide Web will be listed. I will
cite any sources I use for research for the projects and
tips. Drawings and pictures will be included for the
how-to projects as well as other subjects as needed.

Do you need to deep water just certain plants in one bed? You can do this while making your garden more interesting. How? By making a tube of clay that is buried eight to ten inches below the ground with eight to ten inches sticking above ground. Water is caught by the tube when it rains or when you water and seeps through the clay into the root system of the plants nearby. The top can be underglazed, carved, and glazed. The bottom three or four inches of the tube should be unglazed and have several small holes to permit the water to seep out. If the tube is just bisque fired, the top portion can be painted with any colorful water proof paint.

Latest thing I have tried is growing my own Gourds. Talk about your beautiful vines--Well, in a back yard, one thing you do not want to do is plant 12 gourd vines and have all of them thrive. With all of the vines which cover most of one side of my yard, I may get 10 mature gourds. It has been a very interesting experiment. (Photos will be added soon.)

TIP

A gardening neighbor once gave us a tip concerning the
compost process. One way to keep the compost from smelling
bad is to use beer. You can pour just a little beer,
fresh or stale, on the heap and the enzimes somehow keep
the odors less strong to nonexistent. If you are of the
male variety, you can drink the beer first and then deposit
it. It works just as well.

                  Believe it or not!
                  Try it and you will!

Do you ever forget which seeds you plant where in your garden? You can make some great markers using clay slabs. You can paint them with underglazes and color-coordinate the markers with the plants in your garden. Glazed, these markers can hold labels that are glued on or painted on with water proof markers. The writing can usually be removed with acedone when you decided to change plant varieties. Markers can be made of just about any sturdy product and made waterproof. But the clay markers can be unique and a nice addition to your garden.
