Statement of the Artist | |
The surface is a radiant display of glowing vibrancy, a myriad of color and sensuous luminescence. The exquisite appearance belies the reality that exists just under the surface. The image is an illusion which has been carefully manipulated to create the ideal disguise according to the expectations of others. The surface is only a mask.
Our very existence can be a myriad of masks and disguises, a facade. When I smile am I truly happy? Is my laughter genuine or is it camouflaging terror that exists within? Is it implied by my surface appearance that all my experiences have been favorable or is there visible evidence of an inflamed, violent, joyful, dramatic, pastiche of existence? The disguise is reflexive, a spontaneous fabrication of an image which serves not only to eliminate judgement of circumstances but also to deny reality and establish correctness and acceptability. Mayhem results when the experiences begin to permeate the exterior shell of vibrant color and confound the facade; when the reality is no longer masked and the observer is unable to clarify the image. |
