Biography of the Artist

Wendy J Hanson

Born in northern Alberta in a farming community. Following a tragic house fire when Wendy was 5 the family moved to New York State (mother's home town) where Wendy started Kindergarten. Moved from there to Sheridan, Wyoming, then Calgary, Alberta and eventually back up to the Peace River district.

Wendy is the survivor of a traumatic childhood and as an adult became the victim of 3 very violent marriages. Eventually she and her 3 children were able to break away and in 1989 Wendy returned to school taking several night courses in Art. From there she went on to college and received (from Grande Prairie Regional College) a Certificate First Class Standing, 1991; Presidents Honor Roll Award; Louise McKinney, Post Secondary Scholarship for Academic; Spectra Scholarship in Art; Diploma in Visual Arts, With Distinction, 1992; Euphemia McNaught Scholarship in Art; and finally received her degree, Bachelor of Fine Arts(art) at the University of Lethbridge, 1994.

Wendy has been exhibited in many group exhibitions and juried shows. Several of her pieces have been purchased for permanent collections in Grande Prairie Regional College and Fairview College. Her largest solo exhibition was a multimedia installation at Peace Gallery North in Fort St. John, British Columbia.

Wendy opened Evergreen Studio in Hudson's Hope in 1995 and although the gallery portion has been closed she continued to hold art classes and provide art supplies for local residents. In 1998 she planned to establish an outdoor sculpture garden for the benefit of the local residents and tourists.
Plans changed, however and Wendy soon found herself in Kamloops, BC and her career in art was forced into the back seat while she immersed herself in computer training, eventually achieving certification as MCP, MCSE, A+ and Network+.
Following her certification Wendy was hired to develop and deliver computer courses for seniors in the Kamloops area and later was employed by both CFDC and The University College of the Cariboo as an instructor. She taught Network+, A+ and MCSA while continuing the Seniors Computer Camp. Following the closure of the department at UCC Wendy relocated to Salmon Arm where she had been offered a teaching position at Okanagan University College.

In 2003 Wendy visited her sister in Yellville, AR and moved there in the spring of that year. Her next career change was a big one and Wendy soon found herself renovating and managing a motel in the Ozarks It was during her major undertaking on the motel that Wendy met and married Jim

and moved to New Mexico. Wendy is once again teaching computers at San Juan College but also operates her own business, Wildflower Tech Creations LLC, where she has managed to find a compromise and married her 2 careers. Wendy purchased a laser engraver in the summer of 2005.

Although her concentration is sculpture, Wendy works in many media and is constantly creating new and different approaches. Her work is often autobiographical and deals with child abuse and family violence. As well as being a visual artist, Wendy is also a prolific writer and poet.
