The Quest

We saw the man
Upon the hill
A-gazin' at the sky
"Here's a man to lead," we said,
"and the hill doesn't look so high."

We started, then,
To climb the peak
Before the break of day.
But the hill was higher than we thought;
Some died along the way.

Some lost their hope,
And turned around
To give up on the quest.
We saw and said "Come on; let's go!
We're stronger than the rest."

The days moved on,
And finally
We reached the weathered peak.
"At last!" we cried. "We've come so far
To talk to the man we seek."

We hailed the man.
"Wise one," we said,
"In this life we are lost.
Lead us and tell us what to do;
We'll pay you any cost."

The man turned 'round
And said to us,
"I'm sorry. You had best
Find someone else to lead you;
I'm but a seeker, like the rest."
