Under updating construction 7/98 in progress...I've still got a lot to add and
I eventaully will have each listing linked to their perspective URL (if they have one)
Here is a list of bands and record labels who have contributed
to The
Progressive Underground and WRUV's music library.
Thank you for your contributions!
Cranial Perch - (Chemical) - LOCAL BURLINGTON PROG BAND! Vermont's own psychedelic experimental
rock band that sounds like a mixture of ITS A BEAUTIFUL DAY, VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR and GONG,
with a little SEX PISTOLS thrown in. Alas, word just came (6/98) that bassist Dave Jarvis quit the band...)
Present(Cuneiform)- Roger Trigaux formed Present after leaving UNIVERS ZERO to create a more
heavy-hitting and primal prog-rock band. Their new CD CERTITUDES has long, swelling compositions
and blistering guitar solos that build in hair-raising complex intensity. THIS BAND IS INCREDIBLE IN LIVE CONCERT!!!
Bruford-Levin - (Papabear) - With David Torn and others, experimental ethereal
and sometimes harsh sparse fusion make UPPER EXTREMITIES a must for Crimson fans.
Paragon - (Paragon) - Beautiful ethereal keyboard-driven dynamic prog from Alberta, Canada.
Krel - (Dead Earnest) - High N-R-G space rock intensity & ambient sonicscapes.
Their CD AD ASTRA is the first release on the newly formed Dead Earnest label in the UK.
5UUs(Re/Cuneiform)- Drummer Dave Kermans bass-keys-drums-effects trio is ecclectic, bizarre and
mind-fragmentingly complex in a warped Magma-meets-Caroliner Rainbow-Army kind of way. Absolutely incredible stuff.
Dave is currently moving to Slovenia, and is temping on drums for Belgiums PRESENT.
Par Crone - (Northport) - Space rock/Alt rock from the Chicago area.
Forever Einstein(Cuneiform)- Eclectic, quirky instrumental guitar-bass-drums trio with song
titles like "Stand Back, You Bloated Museum of Treachery!" Intricate and quick-shifting from part to part.
Rattlemouth(Cuneiform)- In-yer-face saxophones honk above a funky prog-groove-fusion bass/drum.
rythm section. Some vocals, mostly instrumental.
Man On Fire - (October) - A mix of neo-prog and synth rock.
Dagmahr - (Dagmahr/Ipso Facto) - Old school style epic symphonic prog from Quebec City.
Diaz-Infante - (Pax) - Diaz-Infante has written a beautiful work for solo piano, slow-moving,
sparse, textured improvisations on basic themes that remind me of Keith Jarretts solo piano works.
Quarkspace & Spacefolds (EJ Records)- Subdued, well-crafted psychedelic/space rock with vocals
remeniscent of Mike Hugg. Spacefolds projects are mesmerizing sonic texturescapes of drums,
swirling keyboards and guitars comparable to Gong/Hawkwind/Ozric Tentacles.
Quarkspace (EJ Records)- Have a new CD out called LIVE ORION featuring extended improv
jams and mesmerizing sonicscapes. They'll be performing at this year's Strange Days Festival in Ohio.
Electrum - (Electrum) - An instrumental power-prog trio with subtle and dynamic
hard-rock flavorings. One main influence in their sound is the Canadian power trio RUSH.
KillSwitch (Hard Knock Records)- Bottom heavy, power prog in the vein of Dream Theater.
Kinesis Samplers 1 & 2 (Kinesis Records)- Mostly well-crafted neo-prog in the Yes/Genesis/Marillion/Camel
school of prog rock. Lush keyboards, soaring melodies and plenty of tempo shifts.
Highlights include Ken Watson, Fonya, Cathedral, Jeremy, and, of course, Iluvatar.
Djam Karet (Cuneiform) - Yowza! Great instrumental compositions with King
Crimson-esque riffs and
Dixie Dregs-esque proficiency. Tight and dynamic, with periods of quiet
ambience turning to metallic riffing.
Hosemobile "Six Foot Hater" (Hosemobile)- is a dark, twisted journey through heavy
riffs similar to King Crimson or Primus and sonic jazz-noise like Universe Zero. Lyrical
barrages are like William Burroughs poetry, vocalized, not sung, over the heavy grooves.
SpaSeSoot (Organ Grinder Records)- Psychedelic space rock that brings to mind Sgt.Pepper's
(Beatles), Satanic Majesty's Request (Stones), and Kula Shaker in a sitar-and-droning-guitars kind of way.
From The Cave of The Iron Mountain (Papabear Records)- Featuring Tony Levin. Recorded in a mine.
Yes, I repeat: recorded in a mine! Ethereal flute, Chapman Stick and bass efforvesce and twine sparsely over
tribal/Native American drumming.
Greyhaven - EP of Heavy prog with metal overtones from the pacific northwest. Highly energetic with great riffs
Doug Michaels and The Outer Darkness - Mutant texturescapes and Adrian Belew-esque guitar over poly-rythmic drumming.
5000 Deep - Funky jamrock/grooverock in the Shokra, Phish and
Spin Doctors vein with awesome complicated progressive riffs and breaks.
Tristan Park (TP ) - Neo-prog similar in feel to Marillion. See them perform live in the Boston area.
Blackmail - EP of heavy metal with progressive influences. From Sweden.
Spaceship Eyes "Kamarupa" (Noh Poetry Records)- is a beautiful ambient/space project
by Don Falcone (of Melting Euphoria, Thessalonians, Spice Barons, Heavenly Music Corp.).
Spaceship Eyes "Truth In The Eyes of A Spaceship" (Cleopatra/Hypnotic)- Don Falcone is back with
with an amazing collection of break-beat and techno electronica, with guests Karen Anderson, Bainbridge (of Hawkwind)
and others. This CD will rewire your mind, so listen to it today...
Box of Crayons (MII) - Classically-influenced symphonic prog, well-crafted dynamics, cerebral compositions.
Discipline (Strung Out) - Long, dark compositions that build in intensity. Rich sound, complex pieces.
Kevin Leonard (SMOE) - Amazing high-energy keyboard wizardry. Very intricate compositions.
Millenium Panic (Radical House)- Bass, drums, guitars, keyboards and loops assault the ears
with a barrage of chops and sonic mayhem similar to the free-form dark fusion of King Crimson or Heldon.
Features the unique bass stylings of Killswitch's bassist who is missing part of an arm.
Ozone Quartet (Flat Five) - Unique instrument line-up of violin, guitar, Chapman Stick and drums.
Beautiful, dark and ethereal instrumental compositions.
Timothy Pure - (Isosceles) - dark, energetic prog, soaring guitars...Their CD "Blood of The Berry"
is an emotional roller-coaster of dynamic prog...they'll perform it in its entirety at the ProgEst in Quebec City July 4.
Finneus Gauge - (Train) - ex-Echolyn Chris Buzby producer and keyboardist.
Highly complex and energetic prog with fem vocals. They perform in the greater Philadelphia-Baltimore area,
go see them live - an incredibly proficient group of musicians. Their CD MORE ONCE MORE is quintessential prog.
Crucible - (Crucible) - Well-crafted prog in the old-school style of Yes and Genesis.
The band has been around for many years and their sound is unique and professional. They perform live in the greater
Connecticut area - Hartford, New Haven, etc... definitely check out their live show.
Psoas - (Onoma Records) - Fem and male vocals over a tight prog/alt rock band featuring a virtuoso flautist.
They are from Pennsylvania and perform locally. Great music, great lyrics.
Glen Stegner - (Watercourse) - Placid and lush keyboardscapes over light percussion. A pleasure to listen to.
Thorne - (AngelThorne) - Concept CD "Iago" dedicated to Ozzy Osborne, theatrical prog-metal
Pat Thomas - (Starnge Ways) - Eccentric psychedelic rock. This guy is eccentric but writes some really cool lyrics.
"It rained Willy for seven days!!"
Mushroom - (Normal) - Eccentric psychedelic garage noise-rock. Kind of like Fred Frith meets Can.
