The Directions and the Four Winds

You will notice that the directions have not been included in the above table. This is because the directions are associated differently by different people. A common system is:
Northern Hemisphere
Earth
Water Air
Fire

Southern Hemisphere
Fire
Water Air
Earth
Another common method is to associate the directions with the elements based on the prevailing winds:
The wind that is hot and moist comes from the direction of Air.
The wind that is hot and dry comes from the direction of Fire
The wind that is cold and dry comes from the direction of Earth
The wind that is cold and wet comes from the direction of Water

The Celtic names of the four winds are:
Tuath,
cold & dry
Iar,
cold & wet
Airt,
hot & moist
Deas,
hot & dry
The classical names of the four winds are:
Boreas (or Ophion or Aquilo)
Zephyrus Eurus
Notus (or Auster)
The Principal Spirits of the four parts of the world are:
Poymon
Moymon Bael
Egin

The Athame and the Wand, Fire and Air

In some magical traditions, particularly the Golden Dawn, the dagger and sword are not seen as tools of fire, but rather tools of air. Similarly, the wand and staff are not seen as tools of air, but rather tools of fire. By this system the tarot suit of wands symbolises fire and the suit of swords symbolises air.

The Times and Seasons

By some traditions, the passage of time, life cycles, seasons, etc, runs: Air (dawn, birth, spring), Fire (midday, youth, summer), Water (evening, decline, autumn), Earth (midnight, death, winter)

The Fifth Element

The fifth element is really the first element, for it is spirit, akasha, kether, nyu, the most basic substance of the cosmos from which all else is formed. It is present in all things and all places; it is the universal spirit of which all our spirits form parts; it is the universal soul which is Godhead.
Consider this mystery: the planes of existence as we understand them start with Akasha, pass through the elements, the physical plane, the ethereal and the astral planes, up to the spiritual planes. It is said that the higher planes are closer to the source, to Godhead. And yet Godhead in its entirety is contained within akasha. I am reminded of the descent of emanations from Kether on the tree of life. The last emination, Malkuth, echoes the source, Kether.
All this aside, Spirit is rarely used in magical workings, for magic generally operates on certain distinct forces in nature, while in universal spirit there are no distinctions.

This table contains some of my collection of elemental correspondences. Some of my collection is adapted from the work of others. I have lost several of my sources, but some prominent ones were: Lady Morgan at Witches' Brew, who in particular gives great suggestions for ritual-forms. Starhawk's Spiral Dance, via a small table posted at GreenPages. Ed Fitch's "A Grimoire of Shadows" for some of the 'temperaments'. Some of the really obscure items come from old magical grimoires, and are included largely for novelty's sake, although they could come in handy some day. 1
