INTRUSION - PASSING WITHOUT NOTICE

This was something I played some drums, sang and wrote some of the music for back in 1981 as James Garcia (given name). Some friends from High School financed and guided the musical direction with the help of a few musician friends. With style similar to Emerson, Lake, & Palmer.

OP, The "P" Issue 1983

INTRUSION: Passing Without Notice

A "progressive" band influenced by "The Nice, ELP, Refugee, King Crimson, Pete Sinfield, Genesis,Yes, etc.," of which they sound the most like the Nice (Keith Emerson's first big group), old-fashioned but not as oppressive as ELP at their most popular. Regal keyboards and percussion dominate and there are touches of humor. --JF

JEAN CHAINE - DISTANT SUNS

OPTION July/August 1986

JEAN CHAINE & HIS ULTERIOR LUX: Distant Suns

"A collection of avant-classical compositions for bass (electric) and accompaniment," he sez. The music's right on that borderline between new music, jazz and rock that I enjoy so much. I already thought Jean Chaine was an excellent percussionist...this is the best "extended" electric bass playing I've heard since Hugh Hopper's experimental work in he mid-seventies! His old pal and collaborator Dimthings lends a hand on one cut, and Rob Schuh drums on another, but otherwise it's all played by Jean (mostly assorted basses, with a variety of other instruments too). Highly recommended. (Keta Music) --Brent Wilcox

SOUND CHOICE #5

JEAN CHAINE AND HIS ULTERIOR LUX: Distant Suns (Keta Music)

After overcoming my aversion to the sloppy, acid casualty cover art and Chaine's weighty description of his music as "avant classical compositions for bass guitar and accompaniment" (progressive rock is more like it), I found the music an impressive display of instrumental ability. Chaine is clearly an expert bass guitarist with imagination to spare, though his talent might gain higher regard if served in a more focussed setting. There's an excess of overdubbing, muddling the recording, and some of the pieces are more like improvisatory sketches than "classical compositions." Most of the selections center around a quirky bass ostinato, with layers of guitar, percussion, and more bass. "Old and New" features the drumming of indie artist Dimthings, and suggests that Chaine would benefit from more of this sort of interaction. --Dennis Rea

NEW MUSIC DISTRIBUTION SERVICE

Jean Chaine & Dimthings/Distant Suns

Jean's original artwork graces photocopies on front and back covers of this self-proclaimed "collection of avant-classical compositions for bass guitar (electric) and accompaniment," with someone called Dimthings helping out on the drum kit. An interesting sample of Chaine's range as a musician, as some of the pieces lean towards rock or jazz as well as classical.

WAYSIDE MUSIC

JEAN CHAINE & HIS ULTERIOR LUX - Distant Suns

Chaine is known for his bass & string work with Dimthings on most of Dim's records. This is Jean's 1st solo release, & it is a collection of avant-classical compositions for elec. bass & accompaniment. Not too dissimilar to Dimthings's strange jazz/rock/kitchen sink outings, Dimthings also appears as a guest performer here. "...burns with intensity & proficiency..." --Sound Choice

Chaine, Jean & Dimthings Distant Suns Keta Music KM-269 (LP)

Collection of avant-classical compositions for electric bass & accompaniment by a guy who was in fact a percussionist ...hence the "extended" bass playing recalling Hugh Hopper's experimental work in the mid-70s. Original copies from 1984.

VARIOUS ARTISTS: God Bless America (RRRecords)

My goodness! Three records of American experimentalists in a hand-decorated box with assorted goodies and the entire thing wrapped in an American flag totebag. The way GBA borders on excess seems almost peculiarly American. Due to the nature of the scene that spawned these musicians, a comprehensive overview is impossible and the fact that this seems to be as close as we'll get is probably incidental. What GBA does offer is an exciting look at the diversity (except perhaps for the overuse of rhythm boxes) of the experimental underground. Most of the tracks seem in some way related to the theme of America, from liberal to conservative and much unclassifiable. Walls of Genius' "Letter to Dan Fogelberg" turns a cliched idea into a stunning exploration of how and why an audience relates to a star. Tom Recchion makes jazz-tinged deviance, Blackhouse sets traps of gripping noise and rhythms, Eugene Chadbourne rants about Spiro, Data-Bank-A and Viscera produce almost-pop electronics, Controlled Bleeding moves from sedate to aggressive introspection, and so on. As with any compilation there are a few mediocre entries but for the most part GBA is an embarrassment of riches. --Lang Thompson

JEAN CHAINE - THE DANCING MAN

SOUND CHOICE #17

JEAN CHAINE: The Dancing Man

Listening to this, I very much want to hear more by everyone contributing to this cassette, (which includes David Moss and Dimthings in addition to Jean). Described by his label as bizarre funk-fusion, I didn't expect to enjoy this, (except for the bizarre part) but boy, do I. Why? Well, first of all, Chaines bass playing is extraordinary. Second, the pieces are bizarre. If somewhere in this world these are not considered unusual, tell me so I can move there and hear stuff like this all day long. Third, the songs are composed without a moment of repetitiveness or boredom. Things are constantly changing throughout the nine cuts. Fourth, although bizarre and in constant motion, the pieces hang together as a group and individually. Fifth, the snotty vocals, appearing occasionally, don't screw everything up. (Keta Music) --Sunn Thomas

PRESS-CLIPPINGS ABOUT JEAN CHAINE & HIS ULTERIOR LUX "The Dancing Man" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fazzul Music

"The Basle Markus Stauss certainly is one of the wildest Saxophonists on the Swiss scene. He now joined ULTERIOR LUX with the e-bassist Jean Chain and drummer Dimthingshine from Miami. The trio created an often wild and sometimes bizarre Funk fusion".

Wayside Music (distribution) write up:

Jean Chaine and his Ulterior Lux-The Dancing Man

A long, long time ago in the early to mid 80's, a drummer from Florida used to release albums of 'free rock' or improvised rock/weirdness under the name Dimthings or Dimthingshine in funnily packaged, very homemade looking vinyl record packages with hand drawn covers. On many of his releases was an excellent bassist named Jean Chaine, who also released albums under his name in the same sort of packaging. Eventually Dimthings dissapeared, but Jean Chaine seemingly moved to Germany where I would occaisonally see his name on the back of various improv records, most notably David Moss. This trio live studio recording features Dimthings and Jean together with Spaltklang leader Markus Stauss on saxes. It was originally released on a double lp and all fits here on one CD. "...the result is a raucous meeting of rock and free jazz. Improvisation by knowledgeable players...and it's a sheer delight, thoroughly exhilarating and highly recommended."

This trio recorded a live double LP album "The Dancing man".

ULTERIOR LUX - Live Bootleg From Switzerland

When Jim Rite (the former Dimthingshine) connects with sometime-David Moss collaborator Jean Chaine and saxist/vocalist Markus Stauss, the result is a raucous meeting of rock and free jazz. Improvisation by knowledgeable players. Despite the title, this cassette was mixed from soundboard DAT masters documenting just one stop along their European tour of 1990, and it's a sheer delight, thoroughly exhilarating and highly recommended. -Bryan Baker

DIMDOGMENTALSHINEASANGUISHMASTERHING - DIMTHINGSHINE/HAL McGEE/CHRIS PHINNEY

59 minutes 1991 Electronic Cottage CD (previously on cassette)

THE TAPEATER #6, 7, 8 - THE DEMOTHEQUE NEWSLETTER, April 1993 Issue

DIMDOGMENTALSHINEASANGUISHMASTERTHING

Basically: Both Residents and TG in this tape.... A lover would be happy, 'cause here you may find the newest pieces of sounds you ever heard... Curiosity: The three people who did that tape are from three bands: Mental Anguish, Dimthingshine, and Dog As Master, and you have to know hey are famous Homerecording people... Musical instruments: Guitar, keyboards... Sleeve: Our three musicians by a river I guess. (Electronic Cottage)

Dimdogmentalshineasanguishmasterthing

New collaborative works by James Garcia (Dimthingshine), Hal Mcgee and Chris Phinney from December 1990, recorded in Apollo Beach, Florida. A hot, nasty, gnarly, noisy, bizarre tape that takes the listener to the outer limits! Analog & digital synths, voice, percussion, guitar. A one of a kind collab you won't want to miss.

Improvijazzation Nation (date unknown)

For those who are relatively 'new' to this networkin' thang (as the temporarily defunct Electronic Cottage editor Hal McGee used to put it), the title may have little significance... but those of you wh've been 'round for a bit will know that Jim Rite (formerly DimThingShine), Chris Phinney (of Mental Anguish label) & Hal McGee (editor of the arorementioned 'zine) were (& in a certain sense, still are) prime MOVERS & SHAKERS of the home-taping movement! On this outing, they got together at EC headquarters in Apollo Beach, Florida to fashion a synthmadness that sounds much like the first Apollo mission probably did... GIGANTIC sounds paint a flowing and moving protrait of sound that (if yer' into synthlarge at all) will transport you! If you DON'T like sound pictures, and absolutely INSIST on having melody lines with NO noise, this won't turn you on! It's surely best received in a laid-back atmosphere, lights low, no disturbabnce & only th' lights o' the deck to guide you... as I listened to it that way, I couldn't help but picture the musics as a background for a video of that first Apollo flight... when listened to in that fashion, this tape is an absolute KILLER! It comes HIGHLY recommended for all aficionados of sound experiences!  Rotcod Zzaj

James Garcia (Dimthingshine) writes:

On the surface I feel a time period of the seventies when I ponder back, though it was the beginning of the 90's when we did this. I suppose we brought that decades energy into that get together. Children of the 60's, we were post modern hippies, smoking pot, drinking beer, questioning authority, pondering the mysteries of life, and acquiring a taste for experimental avant-garde music along the way. This session of recording at Hal's place was improvisation using accumulated electronic instruments from the 80's for the most part. I suppose this audio statement is an culmination of 3 generations of experience expressed by experimental underground do-it-yourselfers. On a deeper level this is an intuitive adventure with no boundaries set. An electronic psychological sound circus for those with open eared palates. There is a lot of intensity when I listen back to this stuff. Waves of multi-layered sound come thrashing and splashing .. at times soothing, much of the time pumping the adrenaline. December 2002

POINTLESS MUSIC COMPILATION - VARIOUS ARTISTS

GAJOOB #9, 1993

VARIOUS ARTISTS -A Pointless Compilation

Top notch tracks from artists working in various sound manipulation modes, from collage to noise to pure experimentation. Bite the wax Tadpole, John Wiggins, Fat Hacker/Pets for Feat, Fuzzhead, Dimthingshine, Sick April, Illusion of Safety, Crawling With tarts, Mike Hovancsek, Cudahy/Milstein/Cox, Prose In Cannes, Luigi-Bob Drake & Andrew Klimek, Triptic of a Pastel Fern, Michael J. AS YET UNTITLED - VARIOUS ARTISTS

FILE 13

VARIOUS ARTISTS - As Yet Untitled (CD) (Realization)

A collection on CD that seems like a digital resurrection of cassette compilations of olde, with tried and true names of the cassette underground like Architects Office, Randy Greif, PBK, Michael Chocholak, Hands To, AMK, Arcane Device, and the Haters. Addin Thomas Dimuzio, John Wiggins, Dimthingshine, Illusion of Safety, Static Effect and others, and you've got a more interesting and generally tastier collection than the Cassette Mythos compilation, actually. If you know these folks, then you know to buy this already. If you don't know them and are remotely interested in collage work, noise drones, electronic music experiments, or generally unusual sounds, seek this out. If not.. well, you're dead already so never mind. ---Mason Jones

INDUSTRIAL NATION

Various Artists - As Yet Untitled (Realization Recordings)

I really like compilations like this. You get a generous helping of music, in this case, 15 artists clocking at 68 minutes. It contains familiar artists like Randy Greif, Illusion of Safety, Arcane Device and the Haters. There are artists I've heard of but not heard like Architects Office, John Wiggins and PBK. I figure if a compilation has that much familiarity it's worth checking out. You get to discover other artists worth exploring further. This compilation succeeds at that by introducing me to Michael Chocholak, Thomas Dimuzio, and Dimthingshine among others. The compositional styles of the artists compliment each other and the track sequencing encourages continued and repeated listening. It's very annoying when a compilation doesn't make tonal or thematic sense and even more annoying when you come to a halt because of a poorly placed track. On As Yet Untitled, you roam through an assortment of what can loosely be described as ambient music. However, it's not sonic wallpaper. There's a variety of manipulation techniques, sound sources and intensities that demonstrate how much space there is to explore in experimental music. I think you'll find the compilation of American artists a respectable addition to your music library. --DC

THE NITRO-SNAPPERS

Originally a cassette release on Atlas King

What happens when DIMTHINSHINE and SMERSH team up? The NITRO-SNAPPERS... This group release received mixed reviews of which I found 2 below. Due to my complicated life situation, I didn't pursue a follow-up release. Plan to re-release this on CD.

Review in GAJOOB magazine

By Bryan Baker 6/30/92

The Nitro-Snappers are Mike Mangino and Chris Shepard of Smersh and Dimthingshine. This maiden release is a mixed bag of industrial-bent beat cuts, along with varying shades of experimentation thrown in. "We're the Nitro Snappers" and "Portrayed By Mankind" get things started off with a lot of promise and strong grooves coupled with psych guitar backdrops. But the snappers refuse to maintain the course, stumbling off the beaten path to test other beaten paths, never recapturing the promise of the first few minutes. The Nitros dabble with a variety of percussion sources (sampled and whatnot), which tends to renew interest from song to song, but the framework of each piece needs more strength in order to carry my interest further. .

Improvijazzation Nation, issue # 10 (date unknown .. more than likely 1992)

The Nitro-Snappers:  SAME - So, you wanna' change-o-pace, eh?  Been alla' way thru th' whistlepop & spacezone tapes you kin' deal with for the year, & yer' ready fer' sumthin' NEW?  Here's yer' ticket... our ol' friend Jim Rite (who was then performin' under the moniker many o' you will recognize 'im by - DimThingShine) joins up with Mike Mangino/Chris Shepard (os SMERSH), & takes ya' off on a journey supreme.  Rockin', kickin', scratchin' it's way ta' fame, eh?  Don't expect any breaks, coz' (just like th' old DTS tapes), once she starts, KNOWbody NOSE where she'll stop... much more in a rock vein, but not yer' common everyday AM radio schlock variety, this is FUN!  This tape has some REALLY nice sounds, & they're crystal-clear as well... no mud!  GET it today, RECOMMENDED!   Rotcod Zzaj

HAL McGEE & FRIENDS - MIAMI NOISE

43 minutes 1991 Electronic Cottage CD (previously on cassette)

IMPROVIZZAJATIONATION

Hal McGee & Friends: MIAMI NOISE

Here's one o' th' ANCIENT ones from Hal - recorded in 1991, it's dot Dimthingshine (now calls himself Jim Rite, tho' none of us can seem to locate him), Isaac Ersoff, Ed Bobb, Frank P., & a special trak by Doug Walker (whose Alien Planetscapes stuph was reviewed in the WAY early days of I.N.")... since this IS a D.I.Y. 'zine, listening to this is almost like a "roots" journey. I'm tellin' you, folks, for those who can truly appreciate the D.I.Y. "ethic", you've GOT to have this in yer' library. It's DEFINITELY a "keeper".Broad and sweeping guitars, percussives used sparingly but effectively & some surely "stoned" vocal territories, this is some of the BEST work I've ever heard. Very "space" oriented and FULL bodied material, it comes MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by th' Zzaj & gets the PICK of this issue for BEST group D.I.Y.! Rotcod Zzaj

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would like to say that it consists of Hal & I doing experimental pieces with variations of the above people...also some duets with overdubs. Electronics + Sounds created by all sorts of instruments and manipulation. Plus an extra track with Doug as stated. - 1997

James Garcia (Dimthingshine) writes:

Hal goes down from Central to South Florida to hang with Dimthingshine (James) and they make sure to take time to collaborate in the ThingsFlux low fi studio. They also get the chance to pop into Rat Bastard's old professional studio with members of the now defunct Scraping Teeth and other local South Florida experimental artists to scamper and frolic on whatever musical gear happens to be present, and have it go live to tape. That is what this recording represents historically. What you will hear contains non traditional approaches, sound excursions, delving into altered states of consciousness, and and times pure insanity. We had fun doing it. One of those rare times where a group of artists happen to be in each others company (there are no accidents) and create, share, voice their existence with tribal free abandon. The stuff me and Hal did as a duo taps into the outer limits, they are magical pieces indeed. December 2002

REDRUM - #2 IN A SERIES OF PERCUSSION COMPILATIONS

A release on the fine SPILLING AUDIO Label. It's about DRUMS....DTS piece is just that.

v/a -- REDRUM [Spilling Audio]

This is the second in a series of percussion compilations (that's thump-thump oriented stuff to you, buddy) from Spilling Audio; a third one is on the way soon. There are 22 tracks by 22 artists (more or less -- some work in several configurations, meaning that a few names crop up more than once here). "Station Cry" features a groovin' bass track overlaid with manic bongos and various other forms of percussion; "Strait fo Juan de Fuca: Allegory and Defense" (by Lab Rat) is a more clanking, industrial kind of thing, with wounded howling in the background. Bamboo Cathedral's "Duradjua" relies on a sampling keyboard to process sampled sounds into pounding patterns that lock together to form an intriguing song, while the contribution of David Barnes -- "A Boy, A Dog, A Dinosaur part 2" (part of a long soundtrack for a childrens' mime puppet show, how cool) combines such exotic (and not so exotic) instruments as a bylaphone, Rhodes piano, wood blocks, bronze Chinese rattle, squeaky chair, and more to make a bizarre but captivating track. For the truly bizarre, there's "Kristen's Cacaphony part 1," where speeded-up and spliced percussion sounds weave around a woman (Kristen, natch) providing outlandish answers to questions that aren't present.

And there's more! Yes! The track "Tumblethunder" (Barry Chabala and Mike Hovancsek) claims to be using waterphone and ryom, whatever the hell those are, but actually sounds more like guys rolling ball bearings across galvanized sheets of tin. The Conspiracy's "Africa" starts with an eerie whistle, then segues into a rhythmic groove thing with congas, bongos, and the like, and Dimthingshine's "He That Creates Me, Creates..." just goes completely apeshit with deranged percussion (but where's the beat?). "Seducing Mahatma," by Eleven Shadows, sounds like it could have floated off a Steely Dan album, assuming that the Dan could ever manage to put aside being clever (and uncovering new and unorthodox uses for suspended augmented inverted ninth chords) long enough to just groove. The Qubais Reed Ghazala track "A Light on Black Canvas" uses the passing of a freight train for the rhythm tracks (! -- gee, I wonder if he grew up in Buda and Manchanca too) [yes, i know that's needlessly cryptic.], then uses a lot of instruments with ridiculous names to approximate the sounds of the railroad brake and coupler.... Russ Steadman employs the creative use of household objects like a Tupperware bowl, cardboard box, pots and pans, and other junk to piece together the amusingly-titled "The Vietnam Vet Upstairs Who Drops His Weights On the Floor." The last track on the compilation is "Winded in the Timber," which also appears on the Eric Hausmann tape reviewed earlier this issue....

So what you have here is nearly 90 minutes of supreme weirdness and lots of extremely creative misappropriations of sound in the name of percussion. No doubt a joyous find for the percussion-enthralled... and an orgy of sample source material for the industrial crowd, too. Scope it out. (Other artists featured include Tom Nunn and Doug Carroll, Secret Archives of the Vatican (who get bonus points for their happening name alone, although their track is pretty hip too), The Miracle, John Herron, Sphinx Holotronic, Peter Hinds, Your Host Bobby, Ancient Chinese Secret, Boris and Ivan, and Ken Clinger.)
