he most amazing thing
happened to me.
Just when I thought I would have to give up my job search, I got the
chance to fly back to the Pittsburgh area for a job interview with AT&T.
I drove up in my rental car to this big old building, styled almost like
an old courthouse. I don’t know why AT&T would be in such a building,
but it impressed me. I walked inside, not feeling nervous at all,
and met the HR person. She walked me through several high-tech electronics
labs. I talked to a couple of the engineers, and they seemed excited to
have me there – they wanted me to work on a brand-new research project
(which I can’t tell you about because it’s a secret!). I thought I did
pretty well answering all of their questions and making a good impression.
They passed me back to the HR person at the end of the day – and they made
me an offer -- $72,000 a year! I couldn’t believe it. And the coolest thing
was, I actually had the chance to drive over to my parents’ house and tell
them and all of my friends from high school who are still in the area that
I was coming back.
And then I woke up.
The mockery that is my life goes on. Not only can I not get a decent
job, but possibilities are dangled in front of me like carrots, and then
taken away. Even in my sleep.
Seriously, that’s how vivid the dream was. It seemed like it took hours
to dream it all. I specifically remember the AT&T (although I don’t
think they actually have any engineering facilities around Pittsburgh),
and the $72,000 figure (which is outrageously high, but I figured I must
be due for something to go right). It’s funny – I was just starting
to get over my last failed interview, and now I’m feeling all depressed
again. I guess the moral of the story is….
Waking up sucks.
