"Let's Make A Deal" March 2001 |

So... New CD. PBS. Kevin's facial hair. Right-o then. It would appear that the boys have come full circle -- they find themselves back on the same network that gave them enough celebrity to warrant an eventual upgrade from "The Carmen Sandeigo guys" to "The Folgers guys." God bless PBS. Although there seemed to be an intial panic that their "In Concert" specia wasn't being aired by a good chunk of stations across this great nation of ours, slowly but surely PBS came around and now pretty much anyone who wants to see the fivesome in colored lights and Kevin in full-on leather will have their wish granted. Of course,t he concert is also available on VHS and DVD, lest we stupidly frsake the glories of captialism. However, one of the nice bonuses of seeing the spectacular is having one or two of the guys in studio. And of course there's always those enticing (if sometimes odd) incentives that PBS is putting out to spur pledges. I guess those all-nylon tote bags just weren't bringing in the big money. Some of the weirder pledge-inducers include a phone call from Jeff to chat about "whatever you want" -- I'm not sure if a time limit was specified but I for one would love to get into a discusion about Russian politics for an hour or two with everyone's favorite VP. Another broadcast offered "viewers like you" a chance to purchase a spot as Pretty Woman, which I find just slightly less distasteful than the performance of the Pretty Woman onthe special. I'll refrain from my customary diatribe on the nature of the Pretty Woman selection, but suffice to say that there's just something about buying one's way onstage that smacks of free trade at its worst. And while we're on the subject of buying one's way onstage, the Tampa broadcast offered rabid wannbe back-up singers the opportunity to sing with the guys at the concert in October for a measly $500. What a deal. But why stop there? Pretty Woman? "VIP access"? Pshaw. Piddling scraps to your average diehard fan. Why not up the ante a bit, give them something you really can't get anywhere else? PBS would drum up some serious pledges and viewership for the speical would likely skyrocket. After all, why watch on PBS what you can easily purchase off of Amazon.com? Why, you ask? How about this... Happy pledging. $25.50.......shotgun wedding to Jeff $50.......Chance to, ahem, critique the night's Pretty Woman onstage before the final song $100 (plus tip)......an appointment with Bear's colorist $200.....Jeff's infamous satin pants $500.....Elliott's infamous red pants, autographed $1,000.......Dinner at Red Lobster with Phil the Road Manager...going Dutch $2,000.......Trip to the gym with Bear $10,000.......The cover song of your choice included on the next album $50,000........Day of fun babysitting all seven Rockapella kids $100,000........Scott's g-string [Price varies].......Live performance at the venue of your choice, including your driveway |
