Chat Quest

Basic overview...

Chatting... most people only know it as a screen in which a bunch of ridiculous names ask "Does NE1 wanna chat?", or the ever-popular "Any hot chicks wanna cyber?". Unfortunately, too many people never see beyond that shroud (especially those condemned to AOL *shudder*). What I intend to do is enlighten those who have not seen the light, and push the Internet's aready voluminous amount of chatters into a greater comprehension of just how much is available. Just why am I doing this? It's mostly because I see something like this as a chance to have a lot of people go to my page *grin*, but aside from that, I've been fortunate enough to find a lot of cool things, and feel everyone else should have access to them, or at least not be in the dark. So I have taken it upon myself to create Chat Quest, a site in which you can find out anything you want to know about any chatting program or related site. At this moment in time I'm in the proccess of installing a new hard drive, so as soon as that's done I'll get the opportunity to install even more chatting programs than I already own. Well... here's the current list.

ICQ

ICQ, with a name like that it's almost hard to believe over 2 million people use the program. In reality, this is the most popular chatting network, and with good reason. The most unique function about ICQ is that it allows you to create a list of friends who also own the program. This list is built in and tells you when those people are using ICQ. Since ICQ automatically turns on when you connect to the Internet you basically know whenever a friend is on-line, making it easier to meet on any of the mediums of chat available. It also has a built in messaging system, chatting, file transfer, URL sending, allowing simple communication even if you aren't familiar with any other chat programs. I have found this to be the best overall due to its versatility. Eventually it is predicted that ICQ will eliminate all of the other ones since it is just so much easier to use. As for now, it is mostly used for as a mediator for setting up meeting in other environments such as an HTML chat or mIRC.

HTML Chat

HTML Chatrooms are probably the most often used means of chatting on the Internet. Probably the most easy to use interface and most sensable looking, users soon find themselves addicted to a room for months at a time. Another plus is that many rooms (not Geocities) allow actually HTML tags to be used in conversation. Italics may be used for actions such as grinning or you can bold something important.

Geocities Chat
Arguably the best set of chatrooms provided by one of the best sites in the world. Unfortunately they've recently taken away the HTML and Java. It's not as fun but proves that it truly is the people who make a chatroom last. Some rooms such as SoHo, Area51, Tokyo, TimesSquare, and many other others have captivated the imaginations of chatters worldwide. If you're ever looking for a friend on-line, Geocities is the place to accomplish it.

PowWow

PowWow is another popular chatting program. Mostly because it has the most simplistic voice comunication interface. Enough people own this to make it a worthy download, especially if you normally spend a lot of money on long distance. It allows up to eight people to chat at the same time, and the direct connections are so quick that you can see the words come up as they're being typed.

IRC

IRC was one of the first popular chat mediums, although now it is starting to die down in popularity. Relatively easy to learn, and especially easy to use if you know all of the scripts. For example, just typing in /join #mirc_lounge will bring you to the channel #mirc_lounge. It bypasses the hassle of needing to go to another backdoor and then logging back in like in HTML Chats, and you do not need to know the people you're talking to as you would on ICQ. The flat appearance may chase away some people but many others have grown to like this basic format.

mIRC
A strong chatting program that has tapped into the largest network of chatrooms (Channels) on the net. Allowing file transfer, sounds, and many imovative scripts it is an easy way to access the IRC network and do much more with it. The best thing about mIRC is the ease it creates to go new Channels and Servers. And with over 4,000 public Channels, new friends are amidst. At this time mIRC is going to be used for Fugerian Renewal, an on-line role-playing campaign. The advantages of this for role-playing will be the instant access to music and being able to direct players to on-line illustrations.

JavaChat

This is a promising new technology in the feild of chatting. It impliments advanced Java applets to give the chatters a small network of rooms. At this point there are only 9 rooms but once in you may create a private room, which anyone else may use if they know the name. The technology is developed by eShare and rumored to eventually eliminate HTML Chatting in Geocities because it is much more stable. This is doubtful however because most homestaeaders use HTML chats, it is quite likely they could lose some serious support should they eliminate a favorite activity of a few thousand people. There are still a fair amount of nice people in these chats, I have been surprised on more than one ocasion on the amount of decent people who actually use these new rooms. These are definately a stronf alternative should HTML Chats be discontinued, since they are run from the browser and do not require another program.
