Tribes 2, set to hit stores this week, walked away as the big winner at the 73rd Annual Academy Awards. The innovative online multiplayer game took home almost all major awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Director. Best Picture went to Gladiator, a sword-and-sandal epic about an outcast member of the Empire. Best Actor Russell Crowe starred as the battle-honed swordsman, a proud member of the Galactic Empire that is disgraced, leaving to fight his former masters as a Diamond Sword warrior. Although at times gruesome, the battle scenes illustrate why the Diamond Sword worship the blade and are such fearsome cappers. Best Actress went to Julia Roberts for her portrayal of the spunky base defender in Erin BloodEaglevich. Roberts' first Oscar underscored both her ability to defend others and the voluptuous body armor that Blood Eagle women are equipped with. In a scene from the movie, the base commander asks, "What makes you think incoming enemies will be distracted by your turret farming?" To which Roberts' character replies, "They're called boobs, Ed." The Best Director award went to Steven Soderbergh for his picture Traffic, a topical movie about vehicle-enabled maps and those impatient tribesmates who steal your scout. Though heavy-handed at times, it really makes you think about how important it can be to wait for those heavies requesting, "I need an APC pickup." Several awards, including Best Cinematography and Best Musical Score, were lavished on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This epic follows a young female member of the StarWolf tribe on a voyage of discovery. The movie includes several scenes showing why the StarWolf are so good at jetpack dueling. A Sierra spokesman gushed, "This is so great, to get these awards from our peers really means a lot. They're giving me the 'wrap-up' sign here, so I have to make this quick, but, um, I want to thank the fans and the great team at Dynamix for making us a whole lot of money."
