Crazy Quilt Christmas Tree Wall hanging

Made by Dawn Smith

The idea for this wall hanging came to me during a middle-of-the-night insomnia attack. I had been looking at pattern for a simple quilted tree wall hanging with a calico triangle for a tree on a blue background with a scrap-pieced border. I thought to myself that this was the beginnings of a great crazy quilt design. Before I went to sleep, I had designed the project almost exactly as I wound up completing it. The next morning I hurried and drew up the design using colored pencils so that I wouldn't forget it.

I next transferred the design to a piece of poster board and used this when doing the piecing. The tree has varied colored embroidery and beads. For the background, I decided to use tone-on-tone embroidery. Blues for the night sky and whites and creams for the snow. I also used clear beads and silver thread on the snow. Unfortunately the white embellishments don't show up in the photo.

I had just purchased Crazy Quilt Stitches by Dorothy Bond (click to read my review of this book) when I began embroidering this wall hanging. I tried out many of the stitch combinations in this book. It was a big help, and I learned a lot from it.

The border and fans are made using many different fancy fabrics. There is only one piece that is duplicated.

The only problem with this wall hanging is that I'm having a hard time taking it down after Christmas. I've decided, at least for this year, that it really is a winter hanging after all - and not just for Christmas.
