MORE INFORMATION ABOUT EACH OF THE COMPONANTS

FABRICS

Fancy fabrics like silks, satins, velvets, brocades, moires, taffetas, velveteens, lace yardage, etc...that are suggestive of an under-the-sea environment.
Colors to run in the teals, aquas, tourqoises, purples, navy blues - whatever suggests ocean water.

Natural fibers are preferred by most people, but I have seen some wonderful textured polyesters that make great watery settings. One I've used is teal and simulates snake skin with a nice shimmery effect.

Please don't include quilting cottons - with one exception. I have used a print with small white fish printed on navy. This was too plain for cq, but I fancied it up by putting purple lace over the top of it. Something similar to this would be okay as far as I'm concerned.

EMBELLISHMENT GROUPS

5. BUTTONS - this is the category with the most latitude, so please use your judgement (let's rule out old plastic shirt buttons :-}

Type - any shape, holes, shank if it doesn't stick out too far (they have a tendency to droop), representative (flowers, animals, etc.), round, square, etc... Just remember it needs to fit our ocean theme.
Composition - glass, wood, stone, mother-of-pearl, shell, etc.

Mother-of-pearl and shell are especially appropriate for our theme.

Composition - most will be cotton or polyester
Size - from 1/4 inch to 2 inch width
Amount - 2 (8 inch lengths for the small widths, shorter lengths for large widths)

7.TRIM

Type - if you find something that suggests our theme to you but doesn't fit into one of the other categories, consider it trim.
Amount - you decide - just keep in mind the amounts in the other categories and try to keep it fair.

PATTERNS

The idea here is to share patterns for embellishing our ocean CQs. (NOT patterns for actual projects such as stockings, tea cozies, ets...) Here are some suggestions:

Diagrams for stitch combinations used to cover seams

Drawings and stitch suggestions for ocean plants

Drawings and stitch suggestions for sea creatures

Photocopies and directions for any of the above from projects you have completed. It is especially helpful to be able to see the actual stitches.

Diagrams or sketches for ideas for using some of the embellishments which you have included.

MAILING INSTRUCTIONS:

Here's what you will do, once you've decided what to put in your packages.

Each person would send me up to 15 PACKAGES as outlined above.

1. Prepare up to 15 plastic baggies of 'kits' . Note: Not all packages need to be the same.

2. Put a slip of paper with YOUR name on the inside of each bag so that the name shows. (VERY IMPORTANT SO THAT I DON'T SEND YOUR PACKET BACK TO YOU)

3. Tape MY name and address on the outside of each bag.

4. Get 2 mailers, about 10" x 13".

5. Put YOUR address on one mailer and MY address on the other. Be sure to include a return address on both.

6. Put all of your goody bags in MY mailer. Write on the mailer how many bags you included. If you are mailing from the US, the Post Office has very strong Priority Mail envelopes that are free. Please use them! Up to 2 pounds of fabric may be mailed for $3.00 using Priority Mail. The priority mail system allows up to 2 pounds, so we should be covered by the variations in weight.

Mail the package to:

Dawn Smith
PO Box 1073
Salem, AR 72576
USA

Include in MY mailer the return envelope that is self-addressed and has a priority mail stamp or other stamps totaling $3. Mail your package by the mailing date detailed above. If you are mailing from Canada, please include an unstamped return envelope and $5.00 US. Be sure your envelope is marked for customs as "used fabric" with a value less than $15.00.

Do not use metered postage for the return envelope, as the delay between host receiving and sending out the envelopes invalidates the date on the metered label.

7. Mail MY mailer. E-mail me at dsmith@centuryinter.net to let me expect it.

8. The deadline to mail your goodies is Jan 15, 1998.

9. Wait for goodies to wind their way to YOUR door.

You do not have to wait until after the holidays to send your packages. Anytime you get them ready between now and Jan 15 is fine.

Hope this is clear to everybody. If there are any questions or suggestions, please let me know.
