Crazy Quilt Victorian Theme Swap

Coordinator: Cathi McCutcheon

Here are the guidlines for the Victorian Swap--shamelessly stolen from Dawn's Ocean Swap guidlines.

The idea of this swap is to trade fabrics, embellishments, and embellishment patterns for making Victorian style crazy quilt projects.

DEADLINES:

Deadline for letting me know you want to participate Feb. 15, 1998.

Deadline for mailing your packages: March 1, 1998. (Sooner if you think they will be delayed by international mail time.)

Deadline to get to me by March 15, 1998

Packages to be put in return mail around March 30, 1998.

CONTENTS OF INDIVIDUAL PACKAGES

a) Fabric to equal a 9" x 9" square. (You can include several pieces of varying shapes or just one piece. Please no pieces less than 6" x 6" or 4" x 9")

b) A packet of 3 different kinds of embellishments that will work with the Victorian theme of this swap. In other words choose 3 of the following groups and, to make things fair to everyone, in the quantities outlined.

AND (optional)

c) A sheet or two of embellishment patterns.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT EACH OF THE COMPONENTS

FABRICS

Fancy fabrics like silks, satins, velvets, brocades, moires, taffetas, velveteens, lace yardage, etc...that are suggestive of Victorian style.

Colors will generally be in the deep jewel tones, such as burgundy, black, rich reds, dark blues, emerald green, purples, etc...as well as golds and other "sparkle" effect colors.

Natural fibers are preferred by most people, but many of the velvets, brocades and satins are synthetics, and they are also fine. Please don't include quilting cottons.

5. BUTTONS - this is the category with the most latitude, so please use your judgment. (No plastic shirt buttons please. Keep those for repairs for your old shirts.)

Type - any shape, holes, shank if it doesn't stick out too far (they have a tendency to droop), representative (flowers, animals, etc.), round, square, etc... Just remember it needs to fit our Victorian theme.
Composition - glass, wood, stone, mother-of-pearl, shell, ceramic, etc.
Size - up to a quarter (Canadian or U.S.)

7.TRIM

Type - if you find something that suggests our theme to you but doesn't fit into one of the other categories, consider it trim. Soutache, twisted rat-tail (the bright cording you find on spools at the fabric store), fringes if they aren't too large, to name a few.
Amount - you decide - just keep in mind the amounts in the other categories and try to keep it fair.

PATTERNS (Optional--but would really be great)

The idea here is to share patterns for embellishing Victorian CQs. (NOT patterns for actual projects such as stockings, tea cozies, etc...) Here are some suggestions:

Diagrams for stitch combinations used to cover seams
Drawings and stitch suggestions for flowers, trees, etc.
Drawings and stitch suggestions for cute little creatures like butterflies, bees, babies...birdies. :-)
OK--they don't have to be quite so "cute" but you get the picture here, right?
If you have a favorite fan block pattern you would like to include, or CQ block diagrams.
Patterns for crochet, tatted or punch needle motifs.
Photocopies and directions for any of the above from projects you have completed. It is especially helpful to be able to see the actual stitches.
Diagrams or sketches for ideas for using some of the embellishments which you have included.
MAILING INSTRUCTIONS:

Each person would send me up to 15 PACKAGES as outlined above.

1. Prepare up to 15 plastic baggies of 'kits' . Note: Not all packages need to be the same and if you don't have 15, that's fine. Send as many as you have, but not more than 15.

2. Put a slip of paper with YOUR name on the inside of each bag so that the name shows (or tape it to the back). (VERY IMPORTANT SO THAT I DON'T SEND YOUR PACKET BACK TO YOU)

3. Tape MY name and address on the outside of each bag.

4. Get 2 mailers, about 10" x 13". (Or one sturdy box with a return label and postage included inside.)

5. Put YOUR address on one mailer and MY address on the other. (Include your return mail address on the outside mailer.)

6. Put all of your goody bags and your return envelope in MY mailer. Write on the mailer how many bags you included. If you are mailing from the US, the Post Office has very strong Priority Mail envelopes that are free. Please use them! Up to 2 pounds of fabric may be mailed for $3.00 using Priority Mail. International swappers, might want to use a good sturdy box--taped well.

Mail the package to:
Cathi McCutcheon
P.O. Box 1227
Atascadero, CA 93423-1227
USA

US Swappers: Include in MY mailer--the return envelope that is self-addressed and has a priority mail stamp or other stamps totaling $3. Mail your package by the mailing date detailed above.

International Swappers: If you are mailing from outside the US, please include YOUR RETURN ADDRESS and $5.00 US. If you believe the return postage (for me) will be more than that--you can throw in an extra fat quarter of fabric and we'll call it even! Be sure your package is marked for customs as "used fabric" with a value less than $15.00. DO NOT USE METERED POSTAGE for the return envelope, as the delay between host receiving and sending out the envelopes invalidates the date on the metered label.

7. Mail MY mailer. E-mail me at cathimc@concentric.net to let me expect it.

8. The deadline to mail your goodies is March 1, 1998. You can mail them at anytime before that date after you have signed up for the swap. Just be sure to e-mail me and let me know you've sent them.

9. Wait for goodies to wind their way to YOUR door.

If you have any questions, please ask. HAPPY SWAPPING!!
