Mailing deadline: Feb 15, 1998

Send up to 15 baggies containing your brocade fabric - 9" x 9" squares or 2 pieces adding up to this amount. Please, no fabrics smaller than 6" x 6" or 5" x 9". (One of each of these will do the trick exactly)

Back when the subject of a brocade swap first came up, lots of people had questions about what brocade really IS. Hilary Metcalf was nice enough t o send us lots of valuable information. Excerpts from her message follow:

*************** from Hilary Metcalf's message ******************

According to my fabric 'bible', Claire Shaeffer's "Fabric Sewing Guide", Brocade is defined as a 'decorative surface fabric'. These fabrics are woven with one or more extra sets of yarns to create a permanent puckerin g on the surface.

Brocade is an elegant floral-patterned fabric woven on a jacquard loom with an extra set of yarns. When compared to a damask, which is flat and reverrsible, brocade has a low relief pattern on the face and long floats on the back. It frequently has long satin floats and/or metallic threads.

Woven in several weights, it is suitable for dresses, suits, coats, draperies and upholstery. Imperial brocade is a brocade woven with metallic yarns. Tapestry is woven with one or more extra sets of yarns to create a pictorial or floral pattern. Compared to brocade, tapestry is stiffer and heavier with a rougher surface.Brocade is fabric with a usually raised, woven-in design.

Thanks, Hilary!

Put your fabric in a baggie and in each baggie, so it shows clearly, put To: (my address) and From: (your address). That way I won't give you back your own baggie and if anything happens to your mailer, the post office knows for whom it was intended. (The easiest way to do this is to type it once on your computer, cut and paste to replicate it 15 times, cut the paper apart and stuff your baggies.) On the outside of the mailer you send to me, please put the number of baggies you are sending. That way, there's a good chance you'll get that number back! (Warning, I've never coordinated a swap before - any of you veterans have advice for me?)

Got questions, suggestions, need my address?
