Challenge Swap Guidlines

A lot of people have asked about moving the deadline, soooooo, here is the deal - I am going to move the deadline to July 10. BUT - if you mail your baggy earlier, you will get your return baggy back earlier. Since this is a one-to-one swap, I don't need to wait for every single baggy to arrive before mailing out (some of) the returns!

Everyone will have the same deadline for mailing back the finished product - September 5, which is the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend. So, early birds will get a little more time to work.

My address is:

Barby Oxborrow
731 Kincaid Ave
Sumner, WA 98390

So, here are the official, mostly final but you can still ask questions guidlines:

Each baggy should contain:

1. 4-6 pieces of fabric, not too big, not too small (I'm not going to measure them, so I don't expect you to, either!)

2. some embellishment type stuff, including, but not limited to, thread, beads, buttons, lace, ribbon, etc. A quantity sufficient for the embellishment of the fabric. (keep in mind that we have seen a few examples of beautiful work done with only thread, only beads, or only silk ribbon, so the embellishments may be just a lot of seed beads - this is supposed to be a challenge!!)

3. A theme for your baggy, such as "silent night", "crazy for ewe", "midnight madness", "dirt is fun", or anything else you twisted little brains can dream up Don't feel that you need to add a long explination to the theme - part of the fun is seeing the artist's interpretation of the theme.

4. And, of course, all the usual stuff like name, email, address, and one return envelope with postage.

5. You do *not* need to include plain muslin for backing or batting, or other materials that are not normally seen on the outside of the finished project. Since each project will require stuff of this nature, I can't see paying the cost of shipping it to each other.

6. You do *not* need to include a notebook for the diary in the baggy of raw materials. Since each participant will have to supply one, we can each get one and sent it back with the finished project, and save a little on the postage of sending a blank notebook.

Each participant will:

1. Send in a baggy by the deadline, now set in Jello as July 10 (as opposed to set in concrete )

2. Get back a baggy in the mail and make an object that is consistent with the theme in the baggy they receive. This object does not necessarily need to be a quilt block. Size is between you and the contents of the baggy you receive. This should be a finished object, not just an embellished block. Think minature wallhanging, pillow top (ready for the pillow form to be inserted), needle book, eyeglasses case, small purse or chatelaine, tea cozy or toaster cover or TP cover (depending on your level of refinement), picture frame, notebook cover, stuffed doll or animal (not necessarily a bear), etc, etc......

3. Keep a diary of the experience - first reaction when you see your raw materials and theme, sources of inspiration, techniques and stitches used, how you complied with numbers 4-7 below. Just use ordinary paper, as this will get sent back with the object (notice the very careful avoidance of the "B" word - don't want to limit anyone!!GGGG)

4. You may, if you wish, add up to 3 pieces of stuff from your own stash.

5. The stuff that you use to 'finish' the object doesn't count in #4 above.

6. You must put something on the block that is representative of your own life/personality/home/employment/car/pets (including husbands and children)/or other SO. You must tell us what it is and why it is representative of whatever it is. An example of how this might work is if the theme is "Blue ocean" and you are thought to have a crabby personality, so you put a small blue crab on the block.

7. You must put your initials or a representative (loosely, inner or outer) self portrait on the block, and the date you finish. In essence, sign your work. This can be a very small set of numbers in an obscure corner, or the center of the piece in loud screaming colors, you're the artist.

8. Type up your diary and post it off to whoever is going to put the pictures on their web page (so we can all read the stories behind the work).

9. Then send back the object and diary to me, with another SASE, so I can send you your finished raw materials when they get here. Deadline for mailing the finished object is September 5, the Saturday before Labor Day Weekend.

I will:

1. Collect and distribute the raw materials and the finished objects.

2. Photograph the finished (?) objects while they are all in my living room, before they get sent on, and send the photos to some as yet unknown kind volunteer with a scanner, who can then post them or email them to another kind soul with a web page.

3. Keep track of who gets whose raw materials, and, if you wish, make sure you get your original raw materials back in completed form. Just make a note in your original package of raw materials.

4. Submit a baggy of my own and participate in the challenge!!!

I hope this is all as clear as mud. Each time you send me a package, it should contain a SASE to get something back in. Also, each time you send off a package to me, if you email me that it is on its way, I will return the courtesy by emailing you when it gets here.

Barby (who has obviously been spending too much time alone with her kids!)
