'CRASH' AND LEARN

You figured Hootie & the Blowfish's ballyhooed Fairweather Johnson would easily hold out the top spot its second week out. And you were right, except for that hasty "easily" part. Nearly careening its way to the No. 1 spot was Dave Matthews Band's Crash, with debut-week figures just a hairline fracture or so below Hootie's impressive 259,000-unit count. (SoundScan estimates had the Matthews Band selling a surprising 1 percent fewer copies than the Blowfish.) These good-time nouveau-retro bands H.O.R.D.E.-ed most of the chart glory with their photo finish. 1
