To create what was known as the "Cave" Lair Graphic, I first used 3D Studio Max to create a cave, with a a glow coming from within. I used several rectangles to create the various levels of the cave, and several tapered rectangles to create the ground. By applying textures, I was able to give the cave a rockish appearance, and the ground nearby had the appearance of sand and dirt. (Hopefully).
I then applied a target spotlight to create the lighted section above the cave.
Finally, I loaded the rendered image into Adobe Photoshop to adjust the color levels to how I wanted them, as well as to add the "Neon lights", by adding a text layer with droplight added.
