When proposed with this concept of the so-called "flying saucer" UFO, we must obviously first wonder "Why this disc shape?" As a whole, the general population, when thinking in terms of artificially constructed flying objects, thinks via the idea of a tube like object, with long, narrow wings extending from opposite sides of this object.
(The traditional airplane design.)
So then how, and more importantly why, would a flying craft be designed and built in a saucer pattern? To understand this we must not think of conventional airplanes, but rather of helicopters. Spinning "blades" within such a craft could generate a large amount of lift, perhaps enough that were vents present in the underside of the craft, it would even be capable of flight.
But now we must ask "Why not simply stick with the simpler idea of the helicopter?" There are many possible reasons. First, this "outer shell" may provide protection from any sort of debris which may damage the propellor blades, as well as protection from such other dangers as extreme temperatures and other dangerous environmental factors. Also, if constructed properly, this shell might quiet or even silence any possible noise made be the "blades". Thus, the craft could run virtually silent, perfect for surveillance purposes, or any purpose requiring stealth. Combined with radar-proof design and material and good countershading, the craft sould be rendered almost invisible to any form of detection.
Many claim that such crafts may contain "hyper-gravity drives", using magnetic relations to create an anti-gravity field. Although this too might explain the design method employed, it is not a technology known to me, and I will therefore with-hold any speculations I may have.
However, I will note that a technique already developed a known to me is that of perpetual motion. Were a group of scientists, technicians, physicists, etc. able to apply this to a "flying saucer" design as I have described, it may allow the propellor to operate with little or no fuel. Were such a ship created, it could be a silent, invisible, revolutionary, and incredibly fuel-efficient endeavor. In short, it would be the perfect aircraft.
