Sunbeam
Eclipsed from its place in the sun by the shopping mall, the country store was once an American genre all its own. One such example of the eclectic storehouse of bygone times is a general store indeed compared to a mall specialty shop. The source of everything from groceries to seeds and hardware, Vandine's General Store is located in Nordmont at the confluence of Muncy and Cherry Creeks. This remote site is nestled in the Muncy Valley among the endless mountains of Sulivan County, PA. The area is so secluded that a nearby recreation area along the Appalachian Trail, is known as World's End State Park. Captured here in brilliant sunshine, this splendid watercolor preserves a "Reds" little league baseball player with a worn Wilson glove. The artist confesses to having worn the similar uniform in his youth. The painting titled, "Sunbeam" may also be a triple play, on words, as the appliance sign, solar phenomenon and beaming youth are all common themes.
