A Walking Tour of old Jerusalem - The Church of the Holy Sepulchre - Page 1 of 2

Welcome visitor since 26 June 1999!

The Church of the Holoy Sepulchre was originally built by Constantine in 336 but destroyed by the Persians in 614. The present church dates from the Crusader times and contains many shrines and chapels.


We pass through a narrow door to enter the courtyard leading to the entrance of the Church.

Currently, there is only a single entrance to the Church. It can be seen below at the center left of the photo.

In the Franciscan Chapel of the Nailing to the Cross is this life-size crucifix. Here are the 10th, 11th, and 13th Stations.

This arched stairway leads to St. Helena's Chapel. This was the crypt of Constantine's Basilica in 336 C.E.
