Banjo


- a male Binturong born 3/11/93 arrived on 8/19/95 as an adolescent who had been used in educational programs in California.

This nocturnal animal can be found in Burma and possibly in Nepal, to Indochina and the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Bangka, Java, the Rhio Archipelago, Borneo, and Palawan. Its head and body length can be up to 39 inches, tail length up to 36 inches, and weight as high as 31 pounds. Its black or gray fur is long and coarse, with the fur on the tail being longer than on the body. The Binturong's head is finely speckled with gray and buff and its ear edges and whiskers are white.

The Binturong's natural habitat is dense forests. It usually lies curled up, with its head tucked under the tail. During the daylight hours the Binturong is slow and cautious. During the night it will hunt for birds and carrion. Its diet also consists of fruit, leaves, and shoots. The Binturong has also been known to occasionally dive, swim and catch fish.

The female will breed throughout the year and may give birth to two litters annually. After a gestation period of 91 days she will give birth to an average of one to six offspring.
