It's amazing how much of a one-track mind this country has. The media goes on yaking about a certain pet cause of the month until they've finally talked it into the ground or something better comes along regardless of whether or not the cause was resolved.
Take that Elien Gonzalez kid, for example. If you're reading this more than a week from now, odds are you've forgotten all about it, so I'll remind you. That was that Cuban kid who is the sole survivor of an attempted crossing to America in which his mother and step father died. The news has been giving us minute-by-minute updates on whether or not he'll be sent back to Cuba with his father or stay in America with other relatives. My opinion on this is characteristically succint.
Yeah, it's a shame he lost his mom, but somehow I doubt where he ends up is a matter of national interest. The INS has probably sent THOUSANDS of refugee children back to their homelands with much less than immediate relatives to go back to, and somehow, THIS kid gets the world's attention. Amazing how something as inane as this pushes everything else to second page news. Hell, even the 500+ cult murder-suicides in Uganda are not as important. Granted, it's in friggin' Uganda, and nobody cares about that, but I think people dying are a little more important.
The tragedy of all this is that no matter where this kids ends up, he's going to be permanantly warped out of his little mind. If the people involved genuinely gave a half cup of rabbit turds about his well-being, they would have just flipped a coin and sent him to wherever the coin sent him. I'd love to hear a 20 year update on his life, when he's a drug addled male prostitute with one leg and a variety pack of STD's.
The OTHER thing they could make easier is the presidential elections. They should just have everybody line up and pick the tallest candidate, since he almost always wins anyway. Ironic that in this age where you can destroy half the world with the push of a button, our instincts still desire a leader with physical strength. And THAT, my dear Watson, is why chicks will always have an uphill battle in politics--unless they're Corey Everson.
