" Un ami de Cezanne et de Van Gogh ", Le Docteur Gachet, Gallery Nationales du Grand Plais, from 30 January, 1999.

Le docteur Paul Gachet ( 1828 - 1909 ), 1890, oil on canvas, 68cm x 57cm, Musee d'Orsay, paris.

A gloomy almost sad face leaning on his forearm, the distant look, this is how doctor Gachet went down in history under the paintbrush of his friend Vincent Van Gogh. Born in 1828 and died in 1909, this art collector and amateur painter professed the deepest love for paintings and artists. Frequenting as well Cezanne than Pissaro, gullaumin, Renoir or Monet, he remains famous for his friendly relationship with the Dutch cursed artist he welcomed in Auvers - Sur - Oise. The exhibition organized by the reunion des Musees Nationaux and the Orsay Museum of Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of New York and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam invites us through his collections to a fabulous trip within a century of pictorial creativity. There was an article in London claiming that Paul Gachet, copied a lot of Van Gogh's paintings and the museums has to check if their paintings are Van Gogh's originals or Gachet's forgeries.
