Vancouver, Canada, Zhu Jin Shi, Art Beatus Gallery M1-888 Nelson St. Nov. 6 - Dec. 31, 1998.

Zhu Jin Shi, rice paper, installation, 1998.

I visit Vancouver, Canada a few times in a year. The first thing I do is to visit Art Beatus Gallery. This gallery shows international, contemporary high standard Art, not like the local, native American Art you can see here in the north west Canada, this gallery can stand at the first line of galleries in London England, Cologne, Germany or in Chelsee, NY.

Zhu Jin Shi was born in China in 1954, since he could not express his art in China he emigrated to Germany, to Berlin in 1986 and from there he shows all over the globe. he often returns to Beijing, China where he maintains a modest studio and he collaborates with contemporary Chinese artists.

I've first got acquainted with his work early this year,( March 98 ) at The Art Gallery of Vancouver, the work - "Tau Of Rice Paper", an enormous column, 60 feet high made of 50 000 custom made sheets of rice paper, it was incredible sculpture made of this soft material that gave an impression of a hard and solid mass.

The current exhibition Resonance, Qin Yufen & Zhu Jin Shi

This exhibition investigates the spiritual element of new works by the two Berlin based artists, man and wife, whose work reflect the teachings of Chinese classical text, particularly the writings of Zen and Tau.

For "Resonance" Qin creates a tranquil aesthetic environment through the use of paper with hidden speakers that amplifies sounds of different frequencies. Qin explains her work as " An unpainted picture or a poem without language". Zhu on the other hand fills the gallery with walls and columns of thousands of rice paper, the visitor walk through and feels as if walking in a dense and solemn forest.( For further information: Shen Tian Zheng / David Chan - david@artbeatus.com )
