Ronnie Setter: A process in 3 stages .
The 1st. stage:
A single image is set in mid-canvas. The image is a cast of encaustic that expresses the material as matter and as an idea. The feel of the encaustic that is the "burning in" of pigment into hot liquid wax applied on the painting surface is an essential element in the painting. Laid on the strong lucid color surface, the frozen boil constitutes a presence of "rawness" and of an unconscious sense of being.
The 2nd. stage:
In the next series a divide occurs. The
single image splits and stands opposed to itself. The "opposedness"
is a necessity for the look into the self. It enables the subject
become an object.
An open field is set between the image and it's mirror like an
arena, on which brush strokes, undefined
signs, semi-abstract forms and rhythms refuse to crystallize.
It is a manifestation of the feeling of freedom of the artist.
The use of encaustic as material and matter in the two poles of
the canvas challenges the supremeness of the color.
In painting 4, a diptych, the divide is doubled: the shape of
the piano, that stems from earlier works (The Green Works) is
being cut or broken.
The 3rd. stage:
In the third series the surface is composed
of varied mediums. The darker rectangulars planted in lines are
prints of earlier works of the artist that have been worked on
and manipulated by installing photos from early childhood, of
deceased members of family that interfere with present home episodes
and figures. Past and present blend, memories become matter. The
differentiation between real life, early life and art dissolve
into a feel of existence.
The drawn little images substitute the large encaustic figures
and the abstract "open field" gets a sense of perspective
a formal use for a feeling of past, afar and distance.
