A LITTLE NIGHT MUSING

The night is full, the darkness very deep.
The stars are out but clouds still hide the moon.
I take this walk tonight before I sleep
To ponder thoughts I never have at noon.

I find good vantage from a hilltop nigh
To search for clues in valley lights below.
I watch the lights of moving cars flow by
And wonder where they're from--and where they go.

Those tiny squares of white and yellow light
From malls and homes and buildings all aglow,
Suggest there are activities at night
But don't reveal the things I'd like to know.

How differently I think about some things,
When night enfolds me in its raven wings.
