Certain areas in khon kaen are known to be ocupied by saline soil. There areas are sparsely
covered by certain kind of salt toterant species. It is interesting to carry out a preliminary survey
of these plants. Collection of salt tolerant plants and analysis of saline soil have been carried out in
11 regions in Khon kaen. The total of 28 species are found. These are classified into 9 families
14 species of dicotyledon and 2 families 14 species of monocotyledon. Species with high tolerance
being able to grow both during summer and rainy season are Eriochloa procera,
Pluchia indica, Synostemon bacciformis, Maytenus diversifolia, Azima sarmentosa, Acacia auriculaeformis
and Pithecellobium dulca. Some species are succulent such as P. indica,
Lindernia crustacea and S.baccoformis. E.procera, P. indica and
S. bacciformis are among the most widely distributed.
E. procera which has relatively high percentage of ground cover should probably be promoted
to be cultivated as a forage crop in the Northeast. The soil salinity from 11 regions ranges from 0.15
to 7.25 millimho/cm.
