Sweets and Snacks

Bazooka Joe
Bazooka Joe
This was a chewing gum equivalent of a cross between a fortune cookie and cigarette token points.

The sweet consisted of a large slab of pink chewing gum wrapped in a colourful paper package. The interesting bit lay between the paper and the gum because each Bazooka Joe came with a small cartoon contained inside.

Many types of cartoons appeared over the years including fortunes and bad jokes but most consisted of the humorous adventures of the one-eyed Bazooka Joe and his gang.

At the bottom of each cartoon there was an advert for some gizmo or the other such as a lockable diary, x-ray specs, walkie talkies or some such. These wonderful items could be obtained by either collecting hundreds of Bazooka Joe cartoons or sending money to Canada. For all their popularity I know of not one person who ever sent off for any of these toys.

It is also interesting to note that the post box number for Bazooka Joe toys was 666.

Creamola Foam
A popular kids flavoured powdered water additive throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Once added to the water and agitated it fizzed and foamed up. Available in a variety of flavours in a brightly coloured little tin. Due to declining sales or bad organisation perhaps, production was stopped in 1998. Nobody particularly noticed due to the incredibly long shelf life. Eventually supplies finally ran out a year or two later. It was then, that campaign for it's return burst into life on the internet. The type of people who wished it brought back varied enormously. These ranged from people who tenderly remembered it and wouldn't mind tasting it again to those who seemed to be suffering full blown addictive withdrawal and had to get their kicks from Andrews Liver Salts. People we can only imagine, with hollow expressions, shivering whilst licking the inside of empty creamola foam tins.

The powder has now taken on a virtual (urban) legendary status, rumours and stories running wild even reaching the Scottish press in 2004. A few examples were :-

i) The product can't be brought back as the formula was lost
ii) Similar to i) except "they" are attempting to reconstruct the formula from the only known tin in existence found in someone's cupboard
iii) Loads of people have a secret stash that they are loathe to give to "them" (see ii) in case it vanishes mysteriously
Marathon Bar
This enjoyable piece of chocolate confectionery was renamed "Snickers" a few years ago to make it more internationally recognized. The advertising campaign which accompanied the changed involved a young french women confused because she couldn't understand why such a popular bar was unavailable in the UK even though the packaging design for a "Marathon" with the exception of the name was identical.
