Mattian leaves the dock for the first time.

I remember as a boy reading advertisements in various magazines of how someone could create wonderful vehicles from materials easily found at or near home. I wanted my sons to have memories of actually building something rather than reading and dreaming about it. Thus was Mattian conceived and built.

She's far from perfect in workmanship. I am a skilled enough woodworker to have done justice to the desigin. However, this was truly a father & sons project. Aesthetics and craftsmanship were secondary to the boys actually helping. Roughly speaking for every hour the boys helped with the construction an additional 3 hours of work were required to undo some damage so construction could progress.

I estimated the project should take me about 4 months of evenings an weekends to build this extremely simple design by myself. I still think my estimate was acurate. (The boat was designed to be built in a couple of weekends.) With the boys actively helping it only took us four years from the first pencil marks to the successful launching.

Here is her story in picutres. Better quality graphics along with explanations and anecdotes will be coming soon, so come visit again.
