I earned my BS in Art Education from Northern Arizona University after a lifetime of working in the graphic arts, interspersed with experiences as substitute teacher, teacher's aide, principal's assistant, and leading my own summer art camps. My graphics positions ranged from paste-up artist to Art Director for a small-town newspaper. I came to a point in my graphics career where the most satisfaction I felt was when I trained new-hire workers in my office, so rather than continue with graphic arts I decided to pursue my dream of teaching and inspiring children to do art. In so doing, I chose the less lucrative but much more satisfying path: TEACHER!
Enjoyment of Art class should be just that: ENJOYMENT of art! This is a class in which students are expected to acquire skills in creating art, but the emphasis is on the process rather than the product. What a student learns about the media is most important, NOT whether or not the student has "talent." Students will also learn how social, economic, political, and time and place conditions influence and give meaning to the development of art, as well as how art influences their own lives on a personal level. In addition, they will reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their own work and the work of others.
Students will not only create works of art, they will learn how to critically analyze art and present their work to others. In addition to studio time spent creating art, students are required to participate in class exhibitions and go on field trips to art museums. Some of these are after-school activities to which parents are extended an open invitation and are most welcome!
Students are expected to bring pencils, notebook paper and drawing pad to every class.
Students who miss studio time due to an excused absence may schedule time outside of class (after school) to use the facility under teacher supervision.
