17th C., from the village of Prissovo, near Veliko Turnovo. Tempera on wood, 39.5 x 34.5 cm. Now at the Old Bulgarian Art department of the National Art Gallery l The scene is composed on the basis of the conventional scheme: Christ is in the centre, riding a white ass, facing the group of the apostles which follow him. They are led by Peter and Paul. To the right is the city of Jerusalem, suggested by a single building in front of whose gates stand the notables, holding palm twigs. The high black hats crowning the heads of many of the figures constitute a strange element. Hats of this kind are observed in the wall paintings of the same period in the churches in Arbanassi. The boy in the tree holding an axe is already a familiar element which lends a touch of vigour to the entire scene. The primitive treatment of the personages is typical for the Prissovo group of icons. |
