17th C., from Nessebur. Tempera on wood, 95.5 x 60 cm. Now at the Nessebur Museum l The saints are shown in a frontal position, standing on both sides of a cross which they prop with one hand, the other pressed to their chests. They wear richly ornamented vestments with the relevant insignia. A characteristic feature of this icon is the way in which Helena's head is tied in a kerchief, topped by a high crown. The large heads are out of proportion with the delicate figures but the expressive faces make up for this discrepancy. The markedly warm colours also contribute to that. g
