l The Apostles are shown full-size, standing turned three-quarter face towards the centre, where there is a model of a church which they hold. The altar table with the Communion vessels on it can be seen through the church’s open arcade. The traditional iconography has been applied in depicting peter who is who is with white hair and a short beard. He ios wrapped in a brown himationunder which show the skirts of a blue chiton. He is holding a scroll and the keys of paradise in his left hand. His right hand supports the model of the church. There is an explanation to this gesture in the words which christ addressed to him:” That thou art peter, and upon this rock I will build my church…”(Matthew xvi. 18), “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew xii. P). The Apostle Paul is on the right , also painted in the traditional iconography, with dark hair and a beard, and a high forehead on which there are two egg-shaped protuberances, suggesting deep thought. He holds a closed Gospel, a symbol of his wisdom and his teaching in support of the Christian faith. He wears a blue chiton and a brownish-red himation. There is a pronounced stylization in the treatment of the faces and the uncovered parts of the bodies, as well as of the folds of the fabrics which render the images rather stiff. ll
