Coloring with a 3-D Effect

A three dimensional effect can be given to any coloring page by following some simple guidelines. The following pictures were colored with coloring pencils but crayons will work just as well. Click on the image below to go to the page that can be printed out. Then simply follow the directions below and refer to the color examples.

1. Lupin 2. Bluejay 3. East Point Lighthouse

Directions

The Lupin- The pink section can be done using one dark pink coloring pencil. There are light lines on the image to separate three shades of pink. Color the lightest area by using light pressure and try to using curved strokes. Color the center pink by using medium pressure, and the darkest shade with heavy pressure. The green leaves and stem can be colored with one dark green pencil but it looks best using two. Use a yellow to fill in the trim areas of the leaves as shown. the green areas can be outlines with a dark green (along the thick black lines) The shadow areas can be then colored dark. Light would hit the top of the leaves more so than the bottom so the overall leaves can fade from light to dark.

The blue jay and lighthouse both have landscape backgrounds. The sky can be done in three shades using one blue pencil. Skies are usually darkest at the top . Color with less pressure as you go down so that it fades from dark to light. Water is sometimes a reflection of the sky so the shades can go from lightest to darkest as you move down. Water can also go from dark to light so either will look good. The land can be shaded in the same way, from dark to light downward. The lighthouse itself is simply trimmed in red as shown. To color the blue jay follow the color example. Each blue feather is out lined in dark blue and then shaded slightly with lighter blue. shadows from upper feathers can be added to the top of each feather for a stronger effect. The leaves in the blue jay picture can be either fall colors or shades of green. Outline with a dark color along the black lines and then fade each leaf from dark to light.
