Custom Paintings by Teresa McMahon

Everyone has photographs of friends, relatives, and places that bring back warm memories. Not to mention our beloved pets and cars! No image can portray them more beautifully than a hand painted portrait. It allows you to display your favorite images on a much larger scale for others to enjoy as well.

Formats and Examples

1. Single Subject- Portrait Background

A cloudy or solid background is painted in a color combination of your choice . This draws attention to the subject. You can also chose full body or head shot.

2. Single Scene

This can be a painting of your chosen subject taken from one photo. The painting can be an exact reproduction of the photo, be given higher contrast and brighter colors, or be given major alterations. Distracting objects like phone lines can be removed.

3. Multiple Images (combining more than one photo)

This example shows one subject (the boat from one photo) put into a specific scene (from a second photo or created from scratch). Other photos were provided to use as reference to make changes to the boat and see details.

The addition of color brings old photographs to life. The painting can recapture the mood and emotion of the subjects. It is also possible to combine images from more than one photo.

Commissioning a Custom Painting

To have your personalized painting created:

  1. Decide which format you are looking for. Contact me to discuss sizes and prices. Canvas comes in specific dimensions but you can order a custom made one as well.

  2. Send the photographs of your subject or subjects via the regular mail system or through email. If you chose to email, please contact me first so I can explain the best way of sending.

  3. I will evaluate the quality of the photos and contact you if additional information is required.

  4. If you are having and old black and white photo transformed into a full color painting, you can include a description of the colors which you want used. Otherwise it will be up to my interpretation.

  5. Please note that it is important to provide good photos of the subject in the required position. I can eliminate objects in the photos (telephone poles etc. ) but I cannot drastically alter the position of the subject and accurately add in details which are not provided.

  6. Send a down payment of 50% with your order. Most orders can be filled within two weeks. Rush orders are available at an additional charge. The balance is due upon completion of the painting. There is a 10% discount for orders paid for in full at the time of the order.

Photo Tips

The photos must contain enough information to produce a quality rendering of your pet or other subject. If you are located on Prince Edward Island, I can take the pictures for you (additional charges apply). Here are some tips on how you can take good photographs yourself.

  1. Photographs should be well focused and show plenty of detail. Provide written information for things such as eye color, clothing detail etc.
  2. Use natural light (outdoors) whenever possible. Avoid using a direct flash. The best lighting is three- quarter lighting.
  3. Take some extra close up shots to provide details that don't show up in a full body pose. Remember that the painting will be on a much larger scale than the photographs, so the more information you can provide the better.
