On February 13, 1704, John Butler, merchant and banker, aged 63, having passed away the previous day, was buried in this church(St Jean du Perot) in front of the altar of Our Virgin Mary, close to the wall.
Witnesses: Messire Corneille O'Kiffe prestre, le Sr Gabriel Binet, le Sr andre Brebion clerc...

This document is of interest because it establishes Cornelius O'Keeffe, the future Bishop of Limerick, was in La Rochelle.
At his death on April 29, 1737 he will bequest Jean Butler (future mayor of La Rochelle and son of John Butler of Galway) 100 pounds for the poor of La Rochelle,100 pounds to Mary Gould jr of La Rochelle(is there a relationship with the Patrice Gould listed above as a witness?) and 200 pounds to the daughters of Theobald Clark of Nantes. Richard Hayes in his book: Biographical Dictionary of Irishmen in France.(Gill and Son 1949) and John ArchDeacon Begley(1936) in his book , The diocese of Limerick from 1691 to the present time, confirm these facts. Thank you to Dan O'Keeffe for his help with the "Begley" reference.
