The Story of Hazel Ying Lee, immortal WWII Chinese-American Aviatrix
I am trading Foreign Exchange for my clients in Tokyo, a long commute from my home in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture. I returned to Japan in October 2004 after working for over a year in Naples Florida. I taught Asian Studies, Chinese, Japanese, and ESL at Edison Community College there. During the year 2001-02 I lived and taught in China at Beijing Foreign Studies University's Beidaihe Training Centre. I am 58 years old, married for 24 years to Masako Imai, with one daughter, Naomi, 20 years old, shown above several years ago at Penn and in this link as a 14-year-old at Valley Forge. Naomi has journeyed across the Pacific many times and twice to China, where she stayed with me in Beijing and Beidaihe, and to Florida where she graduated Naples High School. She is an avid swimmer, lifeguard and is very keen on her studies. She is also a teacher of both English and Japanese and a translator.
I am an avid and dedicated ESL teacher with over thirty years' experience, formerly involved in secondary and adult ongoing education, literary translation, and writing.
I once worked as a pilot and flying instructor, and as a dispatcher/pilot for a regional airline, back during and just after my halcyon days at the University of Pennsylvania. (BA C'72, MA G'75). International Relations, History and Chinese Studies, Chinese literature, politics, science and technology. Besides English I speak Chinese, Japanese and Korean. I have completed an English translation of the 40 Chapter version of the Ping Yao Zhuan, a Chinese vernacular historical novel, the version attributed to Feng Menglong of the late Ming. As an E-book it can be downloaded from the University of Oregon, fully searchable, for Microsoft Reader. You can also read the chapters in html, latest version, on this homepage too (click on the header links above), as well as a biography of the author. Here on this webpage there are also translations of Song period Chinese woman poets and a translation by me of the Thousand Character Essay and other things which might be of interest. There is a special link to the Ping Yao Zhuan for Japanese readers of English as this work is traditionally popular in Japan. I am now adding photo galleries on our family, friends, and lives. For many years I participated in Professor Ishida's sinological seminars at Gunma University as a guest and when in Japan I give a yearly orientation to the fast-disappearing (sigh) 4 corner system used in so many good old sinological indexes.
I also build and fly model airplanes as a hobby, and enjoy designing and scratchbuilding them; mostly rubber powered free flight scale models.
Nate
