Former pope John Paul II today confirmed that he did in fact indulge in the atheist belief while he was pope, but denied that he ever "truly felt the non-existence of god to be true...", and went on to say that what he felt; "I was going through a rough time and began to doubt the existence of god, but his love kept me from falling..."

At his 86 years, John Paul II still conserves his sense of humour and wishes a long papacy to his successor, the Italian cardinal Angelo Soldano, but ironically alerts Vatican about his Italic origin: "the history proved that nothing good has came out from an Italian pope, but of course, these are just words from an old Polish former pope".
